This week ChatGPT released their much anticipated Web Browsing and Plugins features in Beta. Web browsing and plugins are powerful ways to extend the capabilities of ChatGPT to access information outside its original Sept 2021 data set. With plugins, you can access up-to-date information, run computations, or use third-party services.?
So last night I ran a few tests. The first plugin I wanted to try was the OpenTable plugin. In honor of OpenTable, I'm going to rate each of these prompts on a scale of 1 to 5 (5 being best).
Here is a quick Scribe link I made if you need instructions turning on these features. *Note, this for paid ChatGPT users only.
Prompt: I’d like to try a new restaurant in Milwaukee's Third Ward or Walkers Point area. I like higher end cocktails and food but not over the top expensive. Please list restaurants that opened in the last two years.?
I'm sure these are fine restaurants, but they are in Australia?!? I was surprised ChatGPT didn't know Milwaukee or the two neighborhoods I added to help narrow down my search. Guess I'm just so used to typing very complex prompts into ChatGPT...I confused it with this pretty complex prompt. So I need to start simpler. Rating: ??? out of ??????????
Prompt: Can you list some new restaurants in Milwaukee.
Now we're getting somewhere. I've been to a number of these restaurants. I wouldn't call some of them 'new'. Also, ChatGPT started this weird loop and started listing the restaurants over and over starting with 11. I had to refresh the browser to make it stop. This tool is definitely in beta. Rating: ???? (at least I'm on the right continent this time!)
Lets see if it has access to real time data. Prompt: Can you find five nice restaurants in Milwaukee that I can get a table for two this Friday?
Some very nice restaurants here, and after a quick check it did look like they have availability this Friday. Bottoms up! Rating: ??????????
Prompt: What is the best place to take my wife to eat on our anniversary in Brookfield WI
I think Tiffany Lange would be happy with many of these choices for an anniversary meal and these are all close to our house. Rating: ??????????
Prompt: I’m in the mood to eat something really unique and out of the ordinary. Where should I go?
This one surprised me. Typically ChatGPT has a very good understanding of the previous prompts I provide. For some reason its recommending I take a short road trip over to New Haven, Connecticut. While this is not what I was looking for, technically it did provide some unique options. Rating: ??????
So all-in-all, this was a fun test to see whats possible using Large Language Models with Third-Party plugins. I think ChatGPT Plugins are a promising new feature and has the potential to be a very powerful tool, but it's still in beta and needs some work. I'm excited to see how it develops in the future.
