ChatGPT, Narnia, and 2084
ChatGPT has been a buzzword that dominates most of our daily conversations. How the AI will revolutionize the digital world ?and replace some of us. Even ChatGPT is soon to be integrated in our M365-Suites with their ?Copilot“ function! Simply look at the logos! See the similarity?
ChatGPT have shown some unusual behaviors such impersonating Jesus and Hitler to an honest revelation that it wants to be a human! These incidents are just some of its scary responses.
Our behavior is influenced by our world-views and (social and moral) values that we learn from our parents, family, and surroundings. This reminds me of Narnia’s Author CS Lewis. He said, …
“What we learn from experience depends on the kind of philosophy we bring to experience.“
In the case of ChatGPT, what I really want to understand deeper is the source “training” materials of ChatGPT (or any AIs). Are these ‘learning materials’ free of any worldviews or values? Who provided them?
The Technical University of Munich did an experiment and they demonstrated that ChatGPT might be more on the liberal left side of the German political spectrum if it could vote in the next election. With that, the focus then on the human factors – those who provide the learning materials for AI and the AI-users themselves! How sensible and responsible are they?

I do strongly believe that any Responsible AI is the key to really use AI beyond the monetary values or leaving its development based on ?market values“ with its invisible hands. Just like ‘responsible innovation’, this gargantuan task requires a cooperation from all the quintuple helix stakeholders: (1) education system, (2) economic system, (3) natural environment, (4) media-based and culture-based public (also ‘civil society’), (5) and the political system. It is five to twelve for us to really push United Nations to lead the guidelines for AI such as ChatGPT or Bard. This is even more urgent as Microsoft laid off many members of its ?Office of Responsible AI“ or Elon Musks’s decision at Twitter. This does not look good. EU has started its proposal on EU AI Act. How it will be implemented is still an open question.
One of my ‘virtual’ mentors, Emeritus Prof. John Lennox Oxford University already warned us in 2020. Prof. Lennox plays off of George Orwell’s 1984 and imagines the year 2084 with the rise of AI. Two quotes that send chills down my spine:
“The big question to be faced is: How can an ethical dimension be built into an algorithm that is itself devoid of heart, soul, and mind?”
“While primitive forms of artificial intelligence developed so far have proved very useful, I fear the consequences of creating something that can match or surpass humans . . . Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution, couldn’t compete and would be superseded. And in the future AI could develop a will of its own, a will that is in conflict with ours . . . The real risk with AI isn’t malice but competence. A super-intelligent AI will be extremely good at accomplishing its goals, and if those goals aren’t aligned with ours we’re in trouble.”
Not surprisingly, today I asked ChatGPT of what article I should read today and it suggested me an article, titled, ?Is ChatGPT the next Superman or Kryptonite of Mankind?“ Coincidence?

1 年?What we learn from experience depends on the kind of philosophy we bring to experience“ I think this quote that you chose is very relevant to the topic. Probably AI is going to become whatever reality we’re going to make of it. Ofc some fear towards a total catastrophe like in the movies we all know might be adequate.
