"ChatGPT is like having a Harvard-educated intern that's really, really bad at its job"

"ChatGPT is like having a Harvard-educated intern that's really, really bad at its job"

That quote came from my neighbor who's a software engineer. Let's talk about AI and why all of our jobs are safe from AI takeover.

Artificial Intelligence. Welcome to the next generation of Googling how to do stuff so we can finish our homework and go play outside. In my opinion, AI isn't going to take our jobs, instead it's going to enhance and elevate what's expected of us - in our jobs.

1?? Augmenting Human Capabilities: AI's like ChatGPT are designed to augment our abilities, not replace them. It excels in processing vast amounts of data, generating ideas, and providing new insights, but it also lacks human experiences, emotions, and contextual understanding... not to mention, it has to be prompted before it can do anything. Like the Wizard of Oz, someone will have to pull the levers behind the curtain.

2?? Enhancing Efficiency and Productivity: AI is a powerful ally in automating repetitive and time-consuming tasks, allowing us to focus on higher-level thinking and strategic initiatives. Offloading mundane work to AI is becoming the norm, but there will always be decisions and tasks outside the AI's capability, or at the very least, more mundane work to find and assign to the robot. I'm reminded of TurboTax, a widely-used automated service that somehow left personal accounting firms in good health and high demand since 1984.

3?? Amplifying Creativity and Innovation: While ChatGPT is proficient in generating ideas and content, it lacks the human touch of contextualizing its creativity for our ever-changing needs and purposes. Creative positions like writing and graphic design are being recognized as the first jobs AI will replace. However graphic designers and writers need a keen eye on the language, coloring, formatting, etc. to ensure the content resonates with different audiences and platforms.

4?? Elevating Customer Experience: AI-powered chatbots can significantly enhance customer service and support jobs. If you ever got the wrong order from DoorDash or Amazon, you probably got a refund by using their automated CX software. These things provide quick responses for routine inquiries, freeing up human professionals to focus on complex and specialized customer needs. This means fewer wait times when we call the internet providers (hopefully).

5?? Job Creation and New Opportunities: Speaking of the internet, history has shown that technological advancements often lead to the creation of new job roles and industries. The internet provided fertile soil for Cybersecurity, SaaS, and Cloud to grow into multi-billion dollar industries. As AI evolves, it will open up unknown avenues for professionals, possibly industries, to offer specialized services. Even the industrial revolution grew the logistics and freight, consumer goods, and insurance industries.

One of my neighbors, a software engineer, admitted that AI is better and faster at programming than he is. However, he described working with the technology akin to "having a Harvard-educated intern that's really, really bad at its job." While AI is plenty capable of doing my neighbor's job, it's shortcoming is not knowing what it's doing, why it's doing it, or if it was done right.

Let's embrace this new technology in conjunction with our real world human abilities. I believe we're here to stay and it's here to help us reach our potential, just keep saying "please" and "thank you" (just in case).

I personally do not believe that AI really exists at all, this is because as a software engineer we design and replicate systems that optimise and improve the real world. We can only do this by clearly understanding the requirements and systems that exist in reality. Today there is a lot we don’t know or understand about the human brain. We don’t know how the brain is capable of storing so much information. How can anyone replicate what we don’t understand? Most AI systems are purely software based. There are plenty of very well designed systems that learn by mistakes this is how most control systems work by implementing errors learned. That could be thought of as intelligence, it isn’t. All todays AI does it act on instruction, true AI could be a system that spontaneously decided to do something that hasn’t been requested and that would be truely frightening.

I’m not worried about AI. It’s a tool. Thanks for sharing the article. Best of luck.

Solid article. This quote "While AI is plenty capable of doing my neighbor's job, it's shortcoming is not knowing what it's doing, why it's doing it, or if it was done right" is the highlight of the article. My fear with AI is that new generations of engineers will not understand the code generated by these AI systems and it will lead to major security or downtime incidents. I've seen some mention that this will be the new Stack Overflow but I respectfully disagree. Stack Overflow has the ability of other engineers to upvote proper solutions and currently AI lacks that capability.
