I know this edition comes after a long time. But I don't want to write unless I have something substantial to share with you.
Today I have two quick topics, both much talked about but with some lost realities in the hype. These are my purely personal views and I am sure not everyone will agree with them.
Yes, GenAI will change the world but not the way everyone expects
Everyone is super excited about ChatGPT and AI has got renewed attention.?
Almost everyone thinks that Generative AI is going to change the world overnight.?
A lot of you have asked my views on it considering I was talking a lot about AI when people were skeptical and now I am kind of silent when everyone is elated.?
I am silent because everyone is talking. Still based on your requests, here is my quick view on this (Purely Personal View).?
Generative AI is just one manifestation of growing AI capabilities. I think AI has dramatic capabilities to change the world but at this point, people may be more excited than they should be.?
When ChatGPT was launched late last year, most people were surprised beyond belief, but those?tracking the field expected it to happen sooner or later. It was already in the making for years.?
The same people who got surprised, are assuming that the pace at which they noticed the growth of AI is actual progress in AI and it will continue. And in a couple of years, it will be too advanced.??
No, it will hit hurdles from here and solve those hurdles and hit again. In the long term, it will be a game-changing technology but not overnight.?
Another thing people are forgetting is that each technology has its costs as well. For AI (and Gen AI) it is too high. All free tools have to recover their huge server (or GPU) costs. It's a matter of time; many of these new tools may disappear.
Again, I am not saying that AI (and Gen AI) will not change business and society drastically. It's the opposite, I think the hype will subside soon, but AI progress will continue happening outside?mainstream highlights and keep changing business. One day again people will realize the world has changed.?
Same way as people thought blockchain will change the world and now they have almost written it off. And it is growing in the background.
I have a lot to say about this but not today. There is a lot of noise already. Let it settle down.
Realities of Leadership - Insecurities
The amount of focus topic of Leadership has got in the last few decades in every organization and management literature, by now we should have had the best Leaders all around us. But is that your experience?
I am sure, Not.
If so much research has happened on this topic and organizations spend so many resources to train people into leaders, why don't we find them around us?

The problem lies in our tendency to deny the ground realities. Having great leaders is a real pressing problem and it can't be solved on paper.
Great leaders are hard to define but easy to identify. When you work with them, you know it. Without knowing the 5 qualities define in Management articles, you can tell by working with someone if they are great leaders or not.
One such less-spoken reality is about leadership and insecurities that I shared sometime back -
Leadership is the first victim of an Insecure work environment.
When people feel unsafe, their survival mechanism kicks in. They will protect themselves first before anyone else.
That’s the opposite of what a leader should do.
If you want true leadership quality (which is the basis of retaining top talent) provide a sense of security to your leaders at every level.
Let's talk about more of these realities in the future.
One Quote I liked
