ChatGPT’s new search feature is out, and everyone’s buzzing about whether it could actually shake up traditional search engines like Google.
Let’s dig in and see what all the hype is about…
Search isn’t just search anymore. It’s a full-on conversation.
Imagine this: You’re not just asking, “What are the best vegan Thai restaurants in London?” You want someone who understands your family’s preferences, your budget, and even that picky eater who only likes mild dishes. Enter ChatGPT’s conversational search.
With traditional search, you’d get a list of places that match “vegan Thai restaurant London.” Sure, that’s helpful, but it’s still up to you to sift through the options, check if they’re kid-friendly, and make a plan.
With ChatGPT, search transforms into a full-on, tailored conversation.
?? Instead of just giving you options, ChatGPT can help create a whole evening itinerary. You can:
ChatGPT becomes your virtual planner, piecing together an evening that fits your unique needs and interests.
It’s not just search; it’s search that listens, adapts, and plans with you!
Another example: ChatGPT search prompt
"I'm planning to visit Florence for 2 weeks in spring with my 10-year-old kids. I love food and photography but hate crowds. I want luxury on a budget. Can you help me plan my trip?"
ChatGPT Search:
It further asked me thoughtful questions like
Why Should Brands Care?
Traditional SEO isn’t enough anymore. SEO used to be all about keyword-stuffing and getting to the top of that first search page, but ChatGPT’s flipped the script.
It’s not just keywords now; it’s about what people actually want to know in real time.

How to Keep Up?
The Tale of Two Searches
For context, here are the stats:
As of November 2024, ChatGPT has achieved over 200 million weekly active users, doubling its user base from the previous year. (The Verge)
In contrast, Google Search processes approximately 8.5 billion searches daily, translating to about 59.5 billion searches weekly. (SEMrush)
While ChatGPT is pushing the boundaries of what's possible in search, Google isn't standing still, developing its own AI tools like Bard and continuing to evolve its search capabilities.
Where ChatGPT Shines ??
Where Google Still Rules ??
Is ChatGPT killing Google Search? No - but it's fundamentally changing how we think about search. We are witnessing the evolution of search from a tool that finds information to an AI assistant that helps us understand and use that information.
The future likely isn't about one platform defeating the other, but rather about how they'll complement each other.
What this means for Marketers/Brands
As professionals and businesses, the key is not to choose sides but to:
The real winner in this "battle" isn't ChatGPT or Google - it's us, the consumers, who now have more powerful tools at our disposal than ever before.

3 周Really helpful summary - thank you! Due to its speed and capacity, I wonder whether it will enable companies to be found for a greater number of responses than previously. Due to the cumbersome nature of SEO ranking, the approach is usually to prioritise the top volume and converting terms. Wheras now, more breadth can perhaps be secured? Also - do you know if ChatGPT's responses are linear language response? I.e. if I ask in English, it can only leverage English language sources when providing a response?

3 周I already switched to Perplexity which is much better than Google and cites its sources so you can go into the actual information and check it properly. I’ll take a look at ChatGPT search but I’m always concerned about its tendency to hallucinate

3 周Maninder, this is surely a thought-provoking point about the evolution of search with ChatGPT's conversational capabilities. GPT search may indeed redefine user interaction by offering precise, context-rich responses without the typical search engine hassles (read - scrolling, visiting, reading, noting, and referencing). ?? Traditional search engines, like Google, might need to adapt by incorporating more AI-driven features to stay competitive. Imagine a future where querying a search engine feels like having a discussion with an expert (but tailor-made for one's unique needs). While it may not completely replace conventional search models, ChatGPT sets a new standard in how efficiently information is accessed. This could be the beginning of a hybrid model in search technology, merging the best of both AI and traditional approaches. Will be keeping a sharp eye on this for sure.
