ChatGPT junk content is flooding the internet

AI Generative tools such as ChatGPT – arguably the world’s most popular AI platform – have made creating content easier than ever. However, the sheer amount of content now spewing out into the world is astounding. This is creating problems such as:

  • Online sellers such as Amazon being flooded with low-quality AU written books and e-books. In attempt to combat this, Amazon has now put in place a requirement to declare if a book is AI written and is limiting the number of books that can be uploaded in one day.
  • Copyright infringement is prolific. Amazon has forced the removal of content that has clearly plagiarised existing authors. Many more authors are fighting to protect their right to copyright and stop AI using their content.
  • Websites with bulk uploaded content are being created at an alarming rate with the sole aim of attracting traffic to display adverts to and to make affiliate sales.
  • The volume of misinformation across the internet is spreading faster than ever before making it harder to find genuine, valuable information.
  • AI is known for delivering content with factual errors and together with data privacy concerns, many large companies have banned employees from using ChatGPT including wall street banks, tech companies such as Apple and Samsung and some countries have also banned its use – Italy, Russia, China, Cuba and more.

My Personal Observations and Tell-tale signs

I have personally observed an influx of AI generated content across platforms like Facebook and Instagram over the last few months. In particular with AIDA style posts i.e., Attention, Interest, Desire, Action marketing posts. The posts tend to be long, and the voice used is often, well what can I say, cringe.

E.g., Hey Facebook Friends, have you ever wondered….’ Other typical introductions ‘In today’s digital world…’ or ‘In the vast digital realm…’ or the generic ‘Attention business owners’.

A discerning eye can very quickly identify these as being generated by AI tools, specifically ChatGPT. The giveaway? An overly verbose and somewhat formal style of writing that sounds a bit forced and dare I say, trying to sound a bit clever?!

Why Does it Matter?

The world wants authentic. People do not want to feel duped. If they feel mislead you will lose your audience. Our time is valuable, we don’t to spend time reading copious amounts of cr@p only to realise after investing time and effort in reading something, that it did not provide the answers it promised in the headline. The world is tiring of click-bait, yet it is only becoming more prolific thanks in large part to AI tools.

It is clear that people do not value AI content and if they detect its use, you will lose credibility. This perception may change over time, but here and now, this is the state of play.

So, whats the secret to leveraging ChatGPT for high-quality content that doesn’t scream ‘AI-generated’?

1.?????? Fine Tune Your Prompting: Before diving in, ask yourself: What's the tone you're aiming for? Conversational? Clickbait? Professional? Specifying will help your output match your style. Sometimes this takes a few attempts to get right.

2.?????? Choose the Right Version: While version 3.5 of ChatGPT was revolutionary it is clear that it is headed for the sunset. Once you use ChatGPT 4 you will not go back to the free version. The quality is considerably improved in version 4. If you're serious about integrating AI into your content strategy, upgrading is a wise move.

3.?????? Apply a Hard Edit on Your Output: You simply MUST personalise and edit your content. Read it out aloud in your mind. Does it sound like you? If not, swap out words from the output to match words you would normally use from your own vocab so that it starts to sound more like you. Chop sentences shorter so they are more succinct. Go back over this article and notice all the casual language used. This is human content, not AI. By the way, this article is 100% human content.

4.?????? Jasper AI: If you are an AI rookie, you may find staring at the blank screen in ChatGPT daunting. If this is the case, I would highly recommend using software such as Jasper AI. Jasper has a brilliant suite of templates and allows you to very easily use a ‘brand voice’. This means you don’t have to learn how to write detailed prompts as it has done this part for you. It is very user-friendly and less prone to delivering same-same looking output and even has a plagiarism checker built in. In my experience, the output from Jasper will require far less editing than ChatGPT.

5.?????? Top and tail the output: By this, I mean to trim the beginning and the end, much like top and tailing a carrot. The introduction and conclusion are usually verbose and just fluff words. Try reading the content without them. If they add no value, chop them off.

The Human Element is Where the Magic Happens

In essence, while AI tools like ChatGPT offer incredible potential in content generation and increased productivity, the magic only happens when the human element is added. Next time you use ChatGPT remember to read the output aloud and ask yourself if it sounds genuine. Like all things in life, prioritise quality over quantity. Apply a hard edit by topping and tailing the output, trim and personalise with your vocab and brand voice.

Yes, use AI as a productivity tool. Use it to help brainstorm ideas. Use it to create a framework for your content. Use it to provide a FIRST draft. But for heaven’s sake, think of your audience and make the content worth reading. Above all else, STOP cutting and pasting!!!
