ChatGPT & Individuality

AI & ML tool with research and language capability is going to revolutionize the human-computer interface. While great strides are expected on the efficiency front due to standardization, it will greatly compromise individuality.

The apparent new kid of the tech block i.e. ChatGPT is very tempting and fabulously capable. Apparently, because the use of AI with language capability is in use for quite some time but it is in bits and pieces, e.g. all the smartphone keypad words prompts, Grammarly, and voice-based AI’s such as Alexa, Siri, etc. What ChatGPT has done is bring all the above and much more in a single instance. ?Chat GPT or upcoming competing tools will standardize language usage. While the tool will be a boon for language adopters i.e. non-native English/French/ Spanish etc. speakers, it will be a language barometer for natives. ?

Any ChatGPT user will vouch, it is tempting, irresistible, super easy, and super quick. If used once, one would not be able to stay away from it. Practically, it allows the user to avoid spending energy and trouble selecting words, sequencing, grammar, and tone. What is most satisfying is the speed at which communication can be built. These are early days, we have already seen multiple firms integrating Chat GPT with existing tools and apps.

If we step back from amazement, we will realize that we are at the cusp of surrendering human language capabilities. It took millennials to build, propagate, evolve, and adapt languages across the globe. It evolved with each individual, generation, society, and geographical condition in the form of dialects, adages, and meanings for each expression. For all practical purposes, it has allowed each individual to be different in expressions. That makes individuals interesting as the other person has the challenge to decode and understand.

A certain worldwide adoption of a few AI language tools and subsequent standardization of language would kill individuality, to start with in official communication and subsequently on all platform-based communications. We may be up for surprise every time we interact with individuals in person, when they are communicating without the aid of AI language tools. Don’t be amazed if many years down the line we would have found memories of how language deficiencies at the individual level were such a fun.?
