ChatGPT will have a profound impact on how you work

There has been much hype about what #ChatGPT can do and how it will impact business. As usual, the hype is ahead of the curve. However, when you look at ChatGPT (and other similar tools) in the context of humanity's journey to turn data into knowledge, it is indeed a massive leap in capabilities, not unlike how the world changed after we added search engines for the Web.

According to ChatGPT- this is the hierarchical order of data to wisdom:

"Data refers to raw, unprocessed facts and figures.

Information is processed data that has been organized, structured, and presented in a way that provides context and meaning.

Knowledge is the understanding, awareness, or familiarity with a particular subject or situation that is acquired through experience or study.

Wisdom is the ability to make sound judgments and decisions based on a combination of knowledge, experience, and insight. Wisdom is often described as the combination of knowledge, insight, and the ability to apply them in a practical way to solve problems and make sound decisions."

In the early days of the Web, the giant leap was that it made unimaginable amounts of data available to anyone with a browser. In the next leap, search engines enabled us to turn this data into information, making access to this mountain of data dramatically more efficient and useful. What ChatGPT (and similar tools ) do is move us one step further up the hierarchy from information to knowledge. It can generate a clear and concise essay or article on most subjects on command. Alternatively, it can summarize a long article and give you the highlights. It can generate code in many programming languages from a simple one-line request - and all this is just scratching the surface.

Using ChatGPT is like having a professional teaching aid and writer with much of mankind's knowledge at your disposal. It's hard to forecast exactly what this means, but It's safe to say that content creation and learning will never be the same. Note that I am using content in the general sense... this not just writing essays and content marketing; it also includes writing code.

So does this mean we will all be unemployed in a few years? Probably not, but a lot is going to change. As always, humans will be able to move up the intelligence food chain from knowledge-based activity to more insight/wisdom-based tasks. You can get code generated, but you can still optimize it to gain an advantage. It can generate marketing content for you, but you can provide the right inputs and add additional insights to improve it.

A big question for me is: how will people gain the wisdom to provide insights if they never had to go through the learning curve of generating the knowledge ? I guess we all use Excel and still know math (mostly...)
