Tea Time this Friday and we ended up talking about ChatGPT. A lot of recent posts & videos announced #ChatGPT as the disruptor to #Google, The Search Engine. So we wanted to know more.
Initially we did some experiments and found a lot of what the world claims as true. ChatGPT is a powerful language model that can generate human like text. It can improve productivity, answer a lot of questions, do coding and so on. You have already heard or seen all of the wonderful things it can do.
But to derive maximum benefits of the tool, it is important to understand what it can not do OR what it is not meant for. So what can ChatGPT not do?
Let me share some random questions we asked ChatGPT and our thoughts around the answers.
The most important thing to know is that the tool can not answer questions on real time, but only till when it is trained. As of today, it is trained on data till 2021. So it can not answer questions on anything that occurred after 2021.
Having said that, ChatGPT does understand the context correctly and tries to reason it out. If you look at the examples, it directs you to go to the right website, or give a 2023 date which it was fed with earlier, or understand that 2024 Olympics have not yet happened. And that is one very strong feature giving confidence that the tool may soon mature itself to remove this limitation in the future
ChatGPT can be easily made to generate information that does not make sense or intended to deceive. This can be a serious problem if not so good elements start manipulating information. Google instead gives list of all Indian Prime Ministers from 1947 till date.

The accuracy depends on the data that it has been trained on and will falter at times. However, I expect this to be starting issues, and the tool will mature over time once the data is re-trained based on feedback received.
It is yet to be seen if it can accommodate LARGE number of users at the same time. Right now, I ran into capacity issues multiple times, maybe, I was trying at a wrong time. A server upgrade will help.
It is also yet to be seen if ChatGPT remains for free usage. There are alternate tools like Tribescaler which are available as well. Irrespective, it will make its presence in the IT world - in fact, already did.
As we were trying to end our discussion & experiments with ChatGPT, we wondered what ChatGPT will say about itself. Here are some interesting answers
The final take on ChatGPT is that it is a great & must tool to have in one's tool kit. One should understand its limitations & strengths and then use it to one's benefit.
I, for one, am IN !

Thanks Deepak Gupta for the amazing post and triggering the discussion. I used Chat GPT a few times and the results are really detailed and descriptive. Let's see how it copes in the long run, as generally people are looking for real time results during their search. It is a great piece of Engineering marvel, not sure a competitor to Google though!!

1 年I asked it to write coding logic for me in IBM i (AS400 RPG).. such as a procedure to convert a string lower case to upper case. It wrote it for me using current styles and methods. So it can be our coding assistant as well, for any language for that matter. However I could see that for some scenarios, it was inventing non existent APIs, functions etc.. and it's a bit imaginative rather than accurate, when it does not have concrete information. But that itself is too good for a baby it is..

1 年Very itresting facts Deepak. I really liked the pointers discuss on #chatgpt . Thank you very much for sharing. A recent analysis showed that OpenAI could be spending over $100K per day or $3 million per month on running costs, so monetisation was only inevitable. The company is also looking to offer the service as a cloud-based API (Application Programming Interface) that businesses and developers can integrate into their own applications and services, and charging on a pay-per-use basis for it. In my opinion this will be a game changer in IT service industries as well .

1 年Great questions asked about the disadvantages of ChatGPT and it minced no words in replies too..

1 年Very good quick analysis. Let’s hope the tool evolves and remains free.
