ChatGPT and the future of work
*** Just to begin, this newsletter was NOT written using ChatGPT from OpenAI . ***
This is where we're all at right now in January 2023. We now need disclaimers of authenticity to let people know whether or not AI did the work for us or not.
I can remember early in my IT career working in a JAVA development team building a digital transaction system that would eliminate the need to "push paper" for process improvement in speed, improvement in cost reduction, and improvement in labour efficiency. That system achieved all of those goals for the corporation but at the expense of almost 3500 workers at the company. The teams of application developers and application support staff worked tirelessly in just over one year and a half to deliver an in-house developed solution using JAVA. At its core, this new digital transaction system would specifically eliminate the need for paper faxes, paper reconciliations, paper signatures, and several more. ChatGPT reminds me of that time almost 18 years ago when a new technology, method, or process, has come along to completely disrupt the way business is done.
I have good news. All of the benefits of ChatGPT far outweigh the costs. If you've been using ChatGPT over the past week or so like I have, the first benefit you'll come to realize is that some cognitive tasks become much easier and faster when a ChatGPT co-bot AI can help you get started with a core framework that you can improve upon. The only catch is you need to ask it the right questions and frame the question in the right way in a few iterations.
The second benefit of using a ChatGPT co-bot AI solution is its ability to interrogate a corpus of information that is not well distributed across the internet or within a system. I've found that I can search deeply distributed subject matter in a shorter period of time because the responses that are provided help point me in the direction I need to go in a shorter period of time to produce a result.
The third and last benefit of using ChatGPT co-bot AI is it makes learning more accessible and enjoyable to many people. It creates a new way of interactive search and engagement with a search query, unlike Googe search or BING search, because of the 2-way interaction with the ChatGPT co-bot AI interface. Many apps have since popped up that narrow the scope of this benefit for some serious amusement and also some serious heavy lifting and it's inspiring how quickly innovation will benefit so many that can afford to have access to it today.

To conclude, these technology solutions are a reflection of their creators. It should always be tempered with objectivity, and inclusivity, free of bias, have a strategic data governance policy and be applicable to an ever-growing demographic that can be benefitted from it. Those would be my most important desires and aspirations for technologies like ChatGPT in the digital co-bot AI technology world.
Let's all work together to make using AI technology better and more accessible for everyone because technology is truly a reflection of who we are together as a global society and sometimes whom we leave out as a result of its implementation.
