ChatGPT and the Future of Dentistry

ChatGPT’s impact on dentistry is more than just another disruptive tech. This article explores the AI-powered Chatbot’s meteoric rise and implications for dentists and dental practices.

In November 2022, the world of technology was introduced to ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence (AI) powered chatbot. Capable of mirroring intuitive human conversation, this technology has captured the attention of millions of people who have used it for writing tasks such as songs, poetry, essays, and python code.

However, ChatGPT’s impact is not limited to these areas, as it has the potential to revolutionize the healthcare industry, including dentistry.

Given the dental profession has already been impacted by many technological advancements in recent years – from digital x-rays and advanced diagnostic tools to automated appointment scheduling and patient records management – you would think that disruptive technologies are nothing new. Well, not really.?

ChatGPT is Not Just Another Disruptive Tech

The revolutionary language model developed by San Francisco-based startup OpenAI, has taken the tech world by storm since its release some three months ago.

And within just five days of its launch, over a million users flocked to the platform, a feat that took Airbnb six years, Facebook one year, Spotify five months, and Instagram two and a half months to achieve.

Scott Brinker, the highly regarded US-based editor-in-chief of chiefmartech.com and marketing technology expert, described the platform’s success as a “pivotal ah-ha moment” in which the wider public became aware of the disruptive force of generative AI. He highlights 2022 as a turning point for the technology, as multiple implementations moved from the laboratory to practical use.

Brinker warns that we must be prepared for another wave of marketing technology innovation as the economy recovers, as the exponential growth in this field is likely to continue.

The impact of ChatGPT has been so profound that Google has reportedly declared a “code red” situation in response to the sophistication of the chatbot, with sources indicating that the company is concerned it could one day replace its search engine.

OpenAI’s innovative creation has not gone unnoticed by the tech giants, with Microsoft investing another US$10 billion in the startup. The competition among the major tech players to lead the AI revolution has only intensified with the introduction of ChatGPT.

If even the Big Techs are reacting so strongly to the advent of ChatGPT, should we treat it as yet another disruptive technology or a game-changer that has the potential to revolutionize everything?

Question time

It’s perhaps safer to assume that life after the introduction of ChatGPT will not be the same – think Microsoft Office and the iPhone – and that this conversational AI chatbot is poised to take the impact of technology in dentistry to the next level.
