ChatGPT Finally Introduces the Most Awaited Update Only for Plus Users to Surf the Web via Bing

The ChatGPT app on mobile now supports web browsing. But only through Bing. Upon today's announcement, OpenAI officially announced that subscribers to ChatGPT Plus will now be able to search for answers via Bing within the OpenAI’s ChatGPT app.

In the app settings, you can enable browsing by clicking on “GPT-4” on the model switcher, then choosing “Browse with Bing” on the drop-down menu. ChatGPT apps for iOS and Android let you browse the internet now.

OpenAI says browsing helps discover current events and other enriched data that was missing in the ChatGPT’s original data set. Unless browsing is enabled, ChatGPT knew nothing after 2021.

As browsing on AI hits the web this year, OpenAI and Microsoft have made ChatGPT a better assistant, primarily for research. The chatbot was earlier asked, “Can you tell me the winner of March Madness Women's 2023? The results won't be very useful or accurate because ChatGPT shows up research-based information depending on the previous and current data available. However, it cannot predict any winner or future results.

But limiting ChatGPT’s search capabilities to Bing seems little more than an anti-user move. The business motivations are clear — OpenAI has a close partnership with Microsoft, which has invested more than $10 billion in the startup — but Bing is far from the only search engine out there.

The results of an analysis conducted in 2011 suggested that Bing cited more Microsoft-related links than Google. According to a Stanford study, the top search results on Bing have been found to contain some " troubling " errors.

Obviously, Microsoft is continuing to improve Bing's algorithms. But when Bing shuts down inevitably, users will be unable to use ChatGPT's browsing feature.

The ChatGPT app takes you directly to a relevant discussion point when you tap on a search result. Beginning this week, OpenAI will roll out this change and introduce the browsing functionality.
