The landscape swiftly became crowded with various entities aiming to harness the power of these advanced AI models, such as Google's LaMDA, Baidu's ERNIE, DeepMind's Gopher, Anthropic's Claude and lately xAI's Grok.

To maintain its leading position in this burgeoning market, OpenAI has adopted a multifaceted strategy. This includes introducing innovative features and offering free access to earlier versions of its models, thereby expanding its user base. A notable milestone was the recent DevDay conference, where OpenAI unveiled its strategy centred around leveraging network effects to solidify its dominance in the LLM market.
Network effects refer to the phenomenon where a product or service gains additional value as more people use it.
In the realm of LLMs, the integration of more developers and users can create a self-reinforcing cycle of growth and innovation. At the DevDay conference, OpenAI revealed two significant initiatives: the GPT Store and a revenue-sharing model.
The GPT Store aims to provide a platform for developers to offer their LLM-based applications to ChatGPT users, thereby enriching the ecosystem.
The revenue-sharing model is designed to incentivise developers to create and maintain their applications within OpenAI's ecosystem.
Initially, individual interactions with LLMs like GPT-4 were isolated, lacking inherent network effects. This made it easier for users to switch to alternative LLMs with comparable or superior features. OpenAI has focused on creating network effects, a phenomenon where a product's value increases with each additional user. OpenAI addressed this challenge by introducing ChatGPT plugins, allowing developers to integrate the model into diverse applications, creating a symbiotic relationship between users and developers akin to that seen in successful digital marketplaces like the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
