Snapchat has launched its own AI chatbot named My AI, which will be powered by OpenAI's ChatGPT.
According to a Snap blog post, Snapchat users can now access the new conversational chatbot that can write haikus, plan hiking trips, and recommend birthday gifts. However, the feature is only available to paying Snapchat+ subscribers at present.
Snap CEO, Evan Spiegel, has stated that the platform will make the chatbot available to all users in the future. The move comes as other tech giants like Microsoft, Google, and Meta are racing to develop AI models.
According to?The Verge, the chatbot is based on?OpenAI ChatGPT technology, which also underpins?Microsoft’s Bing AI. It can recommend gift ideas, weekend plans, or recipes, Snap said in a?press release. Users can customize the name and chat background of the “experimental feature.”
My AI is designed to avoid biased, incorrect, harmful, or misleading information, and Snap has warned users not to rely on it for advice as it can be tricked into saying just about anything.
A Snapchat spokesperson has explained that My AI has been trained to have a unique tone and personality that plays into Snapchat's core values around friendship, learning, and fun.
Users can give the chatbot a name and select a chat wallpaper, and it even comes with its own alien Bitmoji. The company hopes that the new AI feature will help generate revenue, as it struggles to grow its user base and meet financial expectations.
