Level Up Your Claude Prompting: Quantitative Tricks to Master Long Contexts

Anthropic recently explored techniques to optimize promping when using Claude's large 100,000 token context window. Long contexts like books create recall challenges. Anthropic tested two strategies with quantitative experiments.

Extracting Relevant Passages Improves Recall

First, they prompted Claude to pull key quotes from the context relevant to answering questions. This scratchpad approach improved accuracy, despite a minor latency increase. Focused relevant passages aided Claude's recall versus sifting through everything.

Examples Prime the Model for Success

Second, they provided Claude sample correctly answered questions about the context. Giving multiple examples before new questions primed Claude's pattern recognition to answer better. Generic examples didn't help though - they needed specificity to the context.

Anthropic shared fully reproducible code for others to build on these techniques. As models handle more information, strategies like extraction and priming will become increasingly important. With thoughtful prompting, Claude's vast knowledge is unlocked for complex questions.
