Will chatgpt and AI replace new joiners?
I've been thinking recently about long terms effects of #chatgpt that we will have to face when all the noise fades out. Just like we had to when #covid was receding.
Don't get me wrong - neither do I compare #chatgtp to #covid nor do I try to demonize it in any way. All that I am saying is that some after-effects may be similar or have similar impact and we better start preparing for them.
Let me put it this way: when #covid started we all moved from offices to work at our homes and everybody was thrilled how smooth this transition went. As time passed, people began noticing the "erosion of social capital" which was especially noticeable among new joiners. They were confused and didn't have anybody to show them how things work in the company. Well, they still could learn on the fly but it wasn't as effective and as easy as when everybody was in the same building or space.
What does #chatgtp have to do with this? Do you remember your first days at work? These mundane and sometimes irrational things you had to do? At that time they didn't seem very important or significant but you have to learn how to crawl before you start walking. This was the way to see around the company, and how it works without bearing any bigger responsibility.
On the one hand, some may argue that this will lead to more innovative problem-solving and will be a blessing for many companies as new joiners will rattle the cage and wake up organisations from stagnation. I keep getting, however, this image of a plant without roots that may look great but will not be able to withstand well-known issues or will just quickly bloom and then fade.

On the other hand, some seasoned managers may raise the topic that gen-z people can be easily replaced with #chatgpt that doi their tasks quicker and better (finally no typos!). But what will happen in a few years (maybe faster) when you will need more seasoned experts or replace the old ones and there will be a lack of talent? How to find the right people? How to teach them if they don't know the basic concepts of your business?
In my opinion, thinking that #chatgpt is a silver bullet is appealing but let's be honest - it is a temptation old as humans can remember. Both new joiners and seasoned employees have to find new ways to coexist - and yes this applies also to baby boomers ;)
This is a challenge for all of us, but some things stay, surprisingly, the same - new joiners will be frustrated with mundane tasks (as we all were) and experienced employees will be moaning about how young people these days can do nothing right.
Furthermore, I would like to raise to your attention what Dave Snowden recommends - design your organisations so these people will have to work together - he calls it Trios or Nested Trios. Once you get a new joiner, middle manager and expert in one team and give them a task that gives the highest probability that the outcome will be not only innovative but also working!
