ChatGPT

What now?

In the last couple of weeks, everyone has been talking about how many things ChatGPT can do, and how powerful and transformative it is, at the same time being afraid that this is just the beginning and that soon we will be finding ourselves on the street jobless. And while this can certainly be one possible scenario, I believe we have some time to think about how we can react and how we can better steer it in the right way. And by the right way I mean to have policies and regulations in place so that we can restrict certain things from happening and take care that people and corporations will not use it in a wrong way, while at the same time ensuring that there is a smooth period of transition so that people can adapt to the new way of working.

What I would recommend people to do now is to get informed of the possible outcomes (from a utopian to a dystopian scenario), in order to understand the consequences of letting this ‘growing’ AI unsupervised, and more importantly, lend a hand and help by influencing governments in taking action.

To help you get started I will point you to a book I read a couple of years back where the author talks about all the possible implications that AI could have on society. The book "Life 3.0: Being Human in the Age of Artificial Intelligence" by Max Tegmark explores the potential impact of artificial intelligence on humanity's future. It’s really a great book that you will enjoy it right from the beginning! (no spoilers, but I still think about the intro story)

And since we now have ChatGPT, I decide to ask it to make a correlation between the content of the book and the current theories around ChatGPT.

This was the answer:

“The book "Life 3.0: Being Human in the Age of Artificial Intelligence" by Max Tegmark examines the potential impact of artificial intelligence on society, including the potential for job displacement. While AI has the potential to create new job opportunities, it is also true that some jobs may become automated, leading to job losses in certain sectors.

In the case of ChatGPT, as an AI language model, it is designed to automate certain tasks, such as answering questions, generating text, and even writing code. While this may raise concerns about job displacement for human workers in certain industries, it is important to remember that AI is still in its early stages of development and is currently best suited to perform specific tasks rather than replace human workers entirely.

Furthermore, as AI continues to advance, there will likely be a growing need for skilled professionals who can develop, maintain, and improve these systems. So, while AI may have the potential to automate certain jobs, it also presents opportunities for individuals to pursue careers in related fields.

In summary, while the potential for job displacement is an important consideration when it comes to AI and automation, it is also important to keep in mind the broader context of technological development and the opportunities it presents for individuals and society as a whole.”

To tell you the truth, I couldn’t agree more! For some the AI will come as a blessing, helping them with the ‘monkey tasks’ and freeing their time to do something more creative and/or complicated, while for others it would mean getting out of their comfort zone and having to learn something new, otherwise risking getting redundant.

Also, let me remind you that this is not something new to humanity. The Industrial Revolution and similarly, the Information Revolution, had also a profound impact on the economy and job market. Both of them led to significant job displacement but also new opportunities and job roles.

How far will this AI revolution go? We will have to see…

By the way: Besides the part where I put the ChatGPT answer everything was written by me. But what if, for the sake of discussion, it would not be, and everything would be generated? Would you still find it interesting, or how would you feel about it? Looking forward to your comments.
