Chatbots – friendly or frightening?

Chatbots – friendly or frightening? This week we're looking at Chatbots or Bots (for those who like to fling around in-the-know jargon). As we reviewed in last week’s Mashup, chatbots are artificially intelligent algorithms that are designed to interact with humans in a human-like way – answering questions, performing tasks… I’ve recently been exploring a new relationship with a chatbot of my own (well, actually I share her with many). Her name is ‘Amy Ingram’ or AI for short, built by X.AI, and she’s my new EA… or at least that’s how she’s been billed. In the next few weeks, I’ll find out just how human and helpful she is… in the meantime, check out these articles for a deeper dive.

Tech Crunch – Facebook launches Messenger platform with chatbots
Facebook will now allow businesses to deliver automated customer support, e-commerce guidance, content and interactive experiences through chatbots.

New York Times – What Chatbots Reveal About Our Own Shortcomings
Every so often, an idea comes along that mesmerizes Silicon Valley and convinces the most powerful people there that this innovation will irrevocably alter the course of humankind.
