Chat Plugins: First Impressions

I have gained early access to Chat plugins, which are currently in a "Limited Alpha" phase. This stage represents preliminary user acceptance testing, resulting in a restricted variety of available plugins. However, more plugins are on their way to the OpenAI plugin store, because as part of this program, we can create and submit our own Chat plugins.

Among these plugins, Wolfram|Alpha stands out as the most powerful, transforming ChatGPT into a mathematical whiz. Much has already been written about Wolfram|Alpha, so I chose to explore a different plugin based on Zapier. At present, Zapier offers a limited range of APIs for plugins, but these are sufficient to showcase the potential of combining third-party APIs with the reasoning power of ChatGPT.

Zapier Plugin

In the example below I installed the Zapier Plugin . At this time, you can have up to 3 plugins installed at any time and ChatGPT choses when to use them.?As part of the installation I allowed Zapier to have limited access to my Gmail account.?Installing or uninstalling an application is simply a one-click operation. ?

Let’s start with a simple request. The prompt and response are below.?

Prompt: Summarize the body of the last 3 emails from OpenAI

Response: Here are the summaries of the last 3 emails from OpenAI:

1) Subject: "[OpenAI API Community Forum] [PM] Thanks for spending time with us"

Summary: The email informs that the recipient has been promoted to a higher trust level on the OpenAI API Community Forum due to their active reading. It encourages the recipient to fill out their profile and start a new topic.

2) Subject: "ChatGPT Plugins Developer Early Access"

Summary: The email is an invitation to join ChatGPT Plugins and mentions new opportunities and risks. It encourages the recipient to submit a demo, OpenAPI specification, and manifest, as well as to build an API and read the developer documentation.

3) Subject: "[OpenAI API Community Forum] Summary"

Summary: The email provides a summary of the OpenAI API Community Forum, including 307 new topics and 25,191 new users. It highlights popular topics such as ChatGPT plug-in, ethics, reducing the cost of GPT-4, ChatPDF.com, and Google Spreadsheet.

Now that I have summarized these emails, I can continue to work with them in the context of the chat. For example, let’s determine if these emails warrant any follow-on actions.?

Prompt: ?Identify any follow on actions required from these emails

Response:?

Based on the summaries of the last 3 emails from OpenAI, here are the potential follow-on actions that the recipient may consider:

1) For the email with the subject "[OpenAI API Community Forum] [PM] Thanks for spending time with us":

  • Consider filling out the profile on the OpenAI API Community Forum.
  • Consider starting a new topic or participating in discussions on the forum.

2) For the email with the subject "ChatGPT Plugins Developer Early Access":

  • Consider joining ChatGPT Plugins to explore new opportunities and risks.
  • Consider submitting a demo, OpenAPI specification, and manifest for ChatGPT Plugins.
  • Review the developer documentation for ChatGPT Plugins and consider building an API.

3) For the email with the subject "[OpenAI API Community Forum] Summary":

  • Review the popular topics mentioned in the email, such as ChatGPT plug-in, ethics, reducing the cost of GPT-4, ChatPDF.com, and Google Spreadsheet.
  • Consider participating in discussions on these popular topics on the OpenAI API Community Forum.

I found this to be helpful, but what I really wanted to know was there any must-do items, so I refined by prompt as shown below. By now, I know that ChatGPT will know what I mean by a “must-do” item.?

Prompt: Are there any must-do items ?

Response:?

Based on the summaries of the last 3 emails from OpenAI, there do not appear to be any urgent or "must-do" items. The emails contain information, invitations, and suggestions, but none of them explicitly require immediate or mandatory action from the recipient. The recipient has the option to consider the suggested actions based on their interests and preferences, but they are not obligated to take any specific action.

If you have any other questions or if there's anything else I can assist you with, please feel free to let me know!

Summary?

This is perhaps the simplest example I could come up with, but it demonstrates how ChatGPT plugins make information that was previously unaccessible, accessible within the context of a chat with the Large Language Model GPT-4.?

Keep in mind, there are a number of potential privacy and security issues associated with this simple example. I have just given OpenAI the same level of trust with my personal information as I have with Google. What could possibly go wrong with that ? ?
