A Chat with Indra Nooyi
Today I had an amazing conversation with Indra Nooyi, moderated by Kelli Thompson, at a virtual event we hosted for Women’s Equality Day. We delved into many important topics about leadership, work-life balance (or integration, as I like to say), experiencing burnout as a CEO, and much more.?
Many thanks to the hundreds of engaged listeners who attended and who asked really thoughtful questions. Unfortunately we could not get to answering all of them. So I thought I’d dedicate some time answering a few of the questions from this event here, as they apply broadly to all of us.?
If you weren’t able to attend the virtual event, you can watch the video here .
Here are a few of the great questions that came up, and that I get asked quite often.
How do we co-create a human experience at work where every person can bring their head, heart and hands for our collective success?
I love this question. I often say, DEI—diversity, equity, and inclusion—is not a good enough standard for companies anymore. People need to feel a sense of belonging in their workplace. And to feel like they belong, they need to be able to bring their whole selves into the workplace.?
I believe the best way to encourage this sense of belonging is to lead with empathy, and to treat your employees like they are people first, and coworkers second. Ask about their hobbies, their families, and their pets. It’s especially important if you work from home or in a hybrid environment that you schedule time to get to know the person behind the computer screen. And as a leader, don’t be afraid to show your own personality! You won’t lose respect when your team sees your human side—just the opposite.?
Do you recommend leaders build their knowledge in positive psychology and cognitive behavioral techniques to strengthen their universal skillset?
Yes, these are definitely helpful skills. But it’s important to learn these skills in the context of leading people, from an experiential perspective rather than an academic perspective. I am a big believer in being coached on these types of skills by sharing real life examples with peers in a safe and supportive environment.

Do you lead differently now than when you first started in a leadership position?
Yes definitely. Leaders have to evolve with time, technology and globalization. I would say personally I am much more empathetic and compassionate as a leader today than I was a decade ago.?
I'd love to know what is the SINGLE best piece of advice you've received in your career that would help other women tuning in?
The best piece of advice I received in my career that has helped me a great deal is this: When you see an open door, go through it. Meaning, when you see an opportunity in front of you, go after it. Don't shy away because you may not know or be afraid of what might be on the other side.?
In general, as women we underestimate ourselves and wait to be “asked.” Be confident, raise your hand, seek that opportunity — you will succeed.
As always, you can join my book club on Fable to discuss topics like these in more depth.
And if you’re looking for even more guidance, I can’t recommend Kelli Thompson’s terrific leadership course, Leading With Confidence , enough. She’s a wonderful coach and has developed a terrific curriculum that includes great books, peer learning, and events with inspiring leaders like Indra Nooyi. You can sign up here .?
What is the best career advice you received that you think will help others??

1 年Greetings everyone, I have been working hard to understand the leadership process so that I can build a new Memorial Place online for 2024. Yes, I went out of my way to start a new Website so that consumers have an opportunity to express themselves and honor, connect and keep the legacy and memories of there loved ones alive. The concept is simple a online obuary called Facesbyplaces.com. we still need a bit of support and I am open to suggestions and would be happy someone take a look on our project. Facebook did not like our launch and did not support our concept and bullied us to shut down our website. We offered Facebook to buy us out and they did not reply to our offer. So here I am here reaching out to anyone who would like to see a new company start up in 2024. Our headquarters is located at Facesbyplaces,LLC 215-03 Jamaica Avenue Queens Village NY 11429 . We are looking for an opportunity to develop our products and services to those individuals not with us. Thank you for reading my story.

2 年A lovely article that talks about these important topics on covering indeed, Padmasree Warrior. As these areas are always evolving from one year to another, based on human interpretation and how we go along with managing them each day; by finding information to pick up from research or advice, these small wins are what help us move throughout the day of constant motion to improve within these boundaries of essentially keeping us human at the end of the day. Keep up the incredible work out there, Padmasree Warrior, Indra Nooyi, and Kelli Thompson. ????????

2 年Great session, packed with some very realistic advices :) Sorry for sounding critic but was there a reason live questions during the session weren't addressed? Was there another channel to ask them (that I may have missed!) ?
