Chat GPT: Fixed my shower
It was Sunday morning when my kid comes to me and says “Dad, I’m not getting hot water in my bathroom”.?And my first reaction was Ah, not another expense.
For some context, I stay in Austin, Tx and lately we went through a bad icy storm. The storm resulted in uprooting a 20+ year old tree in my backyard; While no damage to the house, I had to pay $$$$ to get the tree and stump out from my backyard.
So, I was determined to save some dollars by doing a DIY fix. As a product manager, I love exploring new products and for this challenge, my first thought was, this is not a new problem. I’m sure there would be some step-by-step guide or detailed YouTube videos for a shower fix.?
I couldn't find a specific one for the MOEN shower brand.
For giggles, I thought why not try ChatGPT? Here’s how the conversation happened -
ChatGPT supplied me 6 steps to troubleshoot (not listed all in the screen capture), out of which the 6th?one was interesting. I tried all the first 5 steps and could see no results.
After more troubleshooting, I concluded I had a bad cartridge, which needed to be replaced. ChatGPT was leading me somewhere now!

A quick trip to Home Depot and now I had a new cartridge.

Now what steps do I follow to replace it? ChatGPT to the rescue,
I haven’t listed all the steps here, but I followed them to the “t’ and woohoo!
“I have hot water”.
Now, I know maybe a couple of YouTube videos would have given me a solution; But imagine several YouTube videos you’ve to watch to find out the correct one. Sorting through many videos is challenging.
I would imagine a day when YouTube, TikTok having integrated with AI learnings.
But never ever I thought, I would DIY fix a shower, with the help of AI Bot. As a Product person, here are a few of my learnings/takeaways:
1: A tool feed with good data is productive, an AI tool feed with good data does wonders!
With my above experiment and interactions, I understand it is an AI model and has its limitations. However, the knowledge and responses it supplied were based on well-feed training data.
2: The product should effectively understand, cater to, and communicate with users.
3: A simple product interface goes a long way. ChatGPT doesn’t have a fancy UI, but it has an engaging model, which works well and has an engaging user experience.
4: Last but equally important, the product should be trustworthy.?
My product curiosity now triggers my interest to explore –
1: Can ChatGPT create product requirements?
2: Can ChatGPT be taught to provide guidance on feature building and experiences?
