Chasing Dreams at 50: My Journey to the World Championship 70.3 Ironman

Last Sunday, December 15th, in amazing Taupo, New Zealand, I had the honor of participating in the World Championship 70.3 Ironman. It was a race I’ll never forget—a test of grit, resilience, and the power of perseverance.

Three years ago, just before turning 50, I embarked on this Ironman journey. I wanted to prove to myself, and show my daughters this example, that age is just a number. That it’s never too late to chase your dreams and embrace tough challenges.

This race, however, was the toughest I’ve ever faced. The competition was fierce, and the course demanded everything I had. My swim went well, clocking a decent 36 minutes for the 1.9 km. I felt well as I transitioned to the bike, pushing forward with all I could give.

But at kilometer 60 I stopped for a quick natural pause, only to have a referee jump off his motorbike and issue me a penalty red flag. It turns out, what I did was against the rules. I lost 10 crucial minutes, and at that moment, I faced a choice: quit the race or fight on.

I chose to fight.

I got back on the bike and gave it everything I had, fueled by a lesson I’ve carried with me throughout my career: when things go wrong, when the odds are stacked against you, you don’t give up—you give more.

This race wasn’t just about crossing the finish line; it was about resilience, determination, and the belief that setbacks are just opportunities to show who you really are. That is what am bringing back home from Taupo 2024. I thank The IRONMAN Group for giving me such an opportunity to learn more about myself in tough moments. ??????

I can't end this article without thanking my wife Aurelie Dano and my 4 daughters for the incredible support all those months of training and organization - without them all of this would have been just a dream.
