Charting a Path to Low-Carbon Leadership in the GCC: Unlocking up to 90% Emissions Reductions in Greenfield LNG

Last week, once again, I had the opportunity to present at ADIPEC - the world's largest energy conference. ???

This year's theme was, 'Connecting Minds. Transforming Energy.'??, and I presented my work with Simon Flowers FIEAust CPEng MSE on reducing Scope 1 / 2 Emissions Intensity from Greenfield LNG by up to 90%.

The winds of change are sweeping through our industry. Like an oasis in the desert that evolved to sustain many, the LNG industry must adapt to thrive in a lower-carbon reality.

The key insight? Gas-driven compression accounts for 78-93% of typical LNG facility emissions. By tackling this challenge head-on, we've developed a pathway to reduce Scope 1/2 emissions by up to 90%.

Our case study from Australia's NT LNG development from Tamboran Resources Corporation showcases a practical blueprint:

  1. Electrification of LNG facilities
  2. Strategic partnerships for renewable power and CCS
  3. "Avoid & Mitigate First" methodology for systematic emissions reduction
  4. Development of integrated industrial precincts

The results? We can reduce emissions from 0.32 to 0.02-0.04 tCO2e/tLNG. Developing examples from Canada, Norway and Australia are proving that this is possible.

And particularly relevant to ADIPEC was how this model can be replicated across Middle East energy hubs like Ruwais, Jubail, and Ras Laffan, leveraging the region's abundant renewable resources and developing GCC grid.

Like the intricate irrigation systems that transformed ancient deserts, the path to low-carbon LNG requires careful planning and bold execution.

Where do you see the biggest opportunities for your assets in this transformation?
