Charting a New Course: Chartered Accountant's Journey to MBA

We have with us Apoorva Chaturvedi from IIMK PGP-Business Leadership program at Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode

Apoorva's journey to IIM Kozhikode (IIMK) is one that truly stands out. Born into a family of engineers and entrepreneurs, she chose a different path by becoming a Chartered Accountant, The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and working for LTIMindtree . Having lived in Mathura, Vadodara, and Mumbai, Apoorva's diverse upbringing has instilled a sense of adaptability, tolerance, and patience.

The decision to pursue an MBA at IIMK was driven by her desire to expand her horizons and gain exposure to different interactions and methodologies. As a member of the Placement Committee, Apoorva is committed to contributing her unique personality and experience to benefit the class. She believes that approachability, support, and rigorous effort are crucial for the cohort to achieve their goals.

Throughout her life, Apoorva has held onto her mother's wise words:

"Lie to me if you want to, but be true to yourself."

This mantra guides her actions and decisions, ensuring that she always remains honest with herself.

Apoorva had always been an exceptional student, excelling in her academics throughout her school years. However, she was unsure about her career path. When her father suggested Chartered Accountancy, she decided to give it a try. She cleared the entrance and intermediate levels on her first attempt, thoroughly enjoying the learning process.

However, life had a different plan for her. Apoorva faced her very first failure when she attempted the Final CA exam. This experience was heartbreaking, especially as her friends and family assured her that it was okay since most people fail in CA.

Despite their reassurances, Apoorva tried again but failed once more. This period was particularly challenging, as she watched those around her move on with their lives.

The rigorous nature of the CA program, coupled with its time constraints, meant that Apoorva spent days, even weeks, confined to her house to study.?

Despite these setbacks, Apoorva's succeed and became a Chartered Accountant.

She learned the importance of having rock-solid support from people she could rely on, the vital role of persistence for success, and the need for empathy towards those struggling in any phase of their lives.

At IIMK, Apoorva strikes a balance between her academic pursuits, personal life, and extracurricular activities by staying genuine and giving her all to everything she does. She sets her priorities and refuses to settle for anything less than her best effort.

Apoorva's cultural background and upbringing have greatly influenced her interactions with the diverse community at IIMK. Her ability to strike up conversations with people from all walks of life has allowed her to connect with her peers and foster meaningful relationships.

If given the chance to converse with anyone from history, Apoorva would choose Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit, a great source of motivation and knowledge for her. She would love to hear about Pandit's life and the challenges she faced as a symbol of Indian women during India's fight for independence.

One encounter with a stranger that left a lasting impression on Apoorva occurred during a trip to Paris in 2019. Meeting a refugee mother of three, she was deeply moved and inspired by the woman's kindness, optimism, and resilience in the face of adversity. This interaction reminded Apoorva to maintain perspective and not get bogged down by petty problems.

Apoorva's IIMK experience has been transformative, both personally and professionally. Her parents have played a significant role in her journey, providing unwavering encouragement and support. Their influence has helped her overcome procrastination and strive for excellence.

Looking ahead, Apoorva envisions herself in 10 years as a well-rounded, adaptable professional who has embraced new technologies and evolved as a person and leader. She believes that her experiences at IIMK will contribute greatly to her growth and success in the years to come.
