Charting a Greener Course: DP World Canada's Leadership in Sustainable Port Operations
Doug Smith
Visionary CEO at DP World Canada | Spearheading Global Trade through Innovative Maritime Logistics | Championing Economic Growth & Sustainability
In an era where environmental stewardship is not just a choice but a necessity, DP World in Canada is taking decisive steps to redefine sustainability within the logistics and maritime sectors. As the largest port operator in Canada, our commitment to environmental sustainability is a cornerstone of our operations.??
Global Vision, Local Action?
As a global company, DP World is working to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 with a near-term target of a 42% reduction of our carbon footprint by 2030. This path to sustainability is strategically mapped out in our “Our World, Our Future” sustainability strategy, which emphasizes our responsibility to the communities we serve and the environment we operate within.??
This strategy is supported by a robust decarbonization plan anchored by three main initiatives: the electrification of our ports and terminals equipment; investment in renewable energy; and research and development projects that investigate alternative fuels, vessels, and vehicles across our entire portfolio. Here’s what we’re doing in Canada.?
Embracing Clean Energy Solutions?
A cornerstone of our efforts in Canada is the electrification of port and terminal equipment. We are leading by example with a pilot to testhydrogen-electric powered Rubber-Tired Gantry Cranes (RTG) at the Port of Vancouver, which will mark a significant leap towards reducing shore-based carbon emissions. RTGs contribute to nearly half of ports’ shore-based carbon emissions so transitioning from diesel to electric will substantially decrease environmental impact.?
We aren’t stopping there, as we also plan to replace diesel-powered equipment such as ITVs, FCHs, RS and light vehicle fleets with electric versions.?
?
Collaboration Drives Success?
Last year at COP28, DP World endorsed the Green Shipping Corridor, which promotes the adoption of low- and zero-emission fuels such as hydrogen, and the use of renewable energy, shore power and other low-carbon technologies in port operations.??

By signing an MOU, we signaled our commitment to establishing an international green shipping corridor linking Canada’s West Coast with ports in Asia and the Middle East.??
Investing in Shore Power?
Another highlight of our sustainable operations is the implementation of shore power systems at our Vancouver and Prince Rupert terminals. Shore power provides land-based, low-emission hydroelectricity for ships, enabling them to switch off their diesel-fueled auxiliary engines, significantly reducing air emissions and fuel costs.?
Sustainable Construction at Centerm
The construction of DP World and Vancouver Fraser Port Authority's (VFPA) Centerm Expansion Project was executed in accordance with LEED and Envision certification sustainability standards. As a result, the project was awarded the prestigious Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI) Envision Platinum award.??
Green Marine Certification?
Additionally, our Prince Rupert terminal has been awarded the Green Marine Certification, a testament to our comprehensive environmental management system. To earn this certification, the terminal employed advanced technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, protect from spills, and set reduction goals to further mitigate the impacts of terminal activity on the environment. We are pursuing Green Marine Certification at Vancouver and Saint John this year.?
As we navigate the complexities of global trade and logistics, our focus remains on leading the charge towards a more sustainable and efficient future. The journey is long, and the challenges are many, but with strategic investments, innovative partnerships, and a steadfast commitment to our goals, we are confident in our ability to make a lasting impact.?
