A chart designed for correct colour
There are many charts used to evaluate colour on camera but many have a legacy of use rather than having the attributes designed specifically for the video system. DSC labs charts, unlike others, have been designed specifically to meet various video standards (rec 709 for example) working with the video tools such as vector scopes to assist in camera matching for multi camera setups and through the post colour correction process. The Chroma Match Chart now makes the system easier as you can still use the vector scope as a reference tool but it also allows the ability to visually match the recorded video with a correct colour reference file. The system also carries through to the monitor with a reference colour disc that you adjust the monitor colours to get a lined up monitor. Numeric values assigned to lights such as TLCI CRI CCT do not insure colour matching accuracy even when the values match numerically. I have always used the video system itself to evaluate lights as inherently it transforms light into an electronic signal that can be referenced to standards that can be seen on scopes. I have used this process numerous times to match xenon follow spots for awards shows for example. This allows me to provide colour accurate light sources that will appear the same between multiple cameras. Using a chart that also adheres to those reference standards makes it easy to see inequities of a light source and allows correction direction to match these various light sources to the line up source.
The Chroma Match charts still have the qualities needed for scope references but they add in the ability to visually match your lit on set chart colours to a referenced file. DSC Labs offer a wide range of charts for specific applications and many post software manufactures have integrated these reference charts into their process to make correction based on the chart as reference easier. The system also carries through to the monitor with a self-illuminated reference colour disc, called screen align, that you adjust the monitor colours to get a lined up monitor.
As I said many charts are used based on legacy rather than being the proper tool for the system being used.
