It is fair to assume that most UK charities would require Charity Commission approval to employ an existing trustee.? Having said that, there will be exceptions to this because every charity is unique and is subject to its own specific constitution.? In most cases, the Board would need to justify its decision to employ a trustee to the Charity Commission.? A charity employing a trustee would need to avoid conflicts of interests and ensure that the interests of beneficiaries remain paramount at all times.? Importantly, charities are required to uphold public trust.? ?Public trust could potentially be called into question if a trustee wears a second salaried hat.? The Charity Commission has published some helpful guidance on the rules that govern making payments to trustees.?
