Charging: a Problem or a Solution?
Wouldn’t it be nice to have your own personal fuel pump at your slip? There’s a good chance you already have one.

Charging: a Problem or a Solution?

When I was in college, I loved scuba diving.?Still every time I went, I would say everything about the experience is a hassle except for the diving itself.?Living in Central Florida, we had to drive three hours to get to where the clear waters of the gulf stream run close enough to the coast to shorten the boat ride to the dive site.?After two dives over a four hour stretch, you take the three hour ride back home to finish cleaning your gear in the bathtub.?It was a ten plus hour commitment to get an hour and a half under the water…still worth it! ?

As I’ve gotten older and busier, it can be difficult to devote more than a few weekend hours to anything that doesn’t prioritize time with my family.?Fortunately, boating is one of the best ways to bring your family along when scratching your itch to be on the water.?Still, like diving, parts of the experience are not fun for anybody.?The most obvious is refueling.

Unless you are fortunate enough to outsource refueling to your personal captain or to a full-service marina, you have to do this chore yourself.?In the best-case scenario, there may be a fuel dock near your launch or your home where you can wait in line for marina fuel.?Whether the fuel is the right octane for some modern, high-power engines or not, you will pay a premium for fueling on the water.?If you are a trailer boater, you will have to add time to the end of your day on the water (or to the beginning of the next one) to refuel on the road.?Others live on the water where it doesn’t make sense to trailer the boat, but there is no access to marina fuel.?They will have to make the trip to fill gas cans and hand carry them to their boat…oh joy!

Like my diving experience, boaters tolerate these “first world problems” so they can do what they love. For some use cases, these necessary evils are no longer an intractable part of the experience…they are a choice.?No, you are probably never going to get your own personal fuel pump at your slip, but with the growing number of electric boats available, there is a reasonable chance you already have one and just don’t know it.

Many of us need to change our expectations in the process of refueling. Lots of positives to electrification, but we have to accept some change to gain those advantages.

100% agree; to me it’s not about being green (just a plus), the biggest electric lake boat benefit is not worrying about the pain In getting fuel. (But everyone still needs a trailer ??)

I like this, a 'full tank' every morning, after a night of charging, just like an EV. Refilling a boat is a hassle, but there's also something nostalgic about the routine of driving to the corner store, filling up the gas cans, grabbing a chocolate bar or treat with your kids, lugging them to the dock, etc. But I'd probably rather have the full tank every morning!! ??
