Charging Ahead with Fusion Technology

Charging Ahead with Fusion Technology

As EV volumes surge, smart charging and bi-directional energy flows are becoming the new normal. This poses an engineering dilemma - maximize power density and efficiency while minimizing costs. The solution? Fusion Technology.

By strategically combining different technologies like Si, SiC and GaN, we can play to the strengths of each.

For example, consider a 3-phase OBC:

  • The main 3kW or 7kW overnight charging phase efficiency shines with SiC
  • The rarely used booster phases better fit cost-effective Si

We can also fuse technologies within a phase. SiC handles the high frequencies in the PFC while Si or GaN excel in the DCDC.

The permutations are endless, tuned to the use case. For T1/OEMs, the benefits over relying on SiC alone are profound:

?? Mitigate supply chain

?? Optimize bills of material

?? Maintain efficiency

Yet, it undoubtedly complicates design. Having an experienced semiconductor partner to ease development is key. With decades of systems expertise and the industry’s most comprehensive EV power portfolio (Infineon offers all the Power Switches, GateDrive, Sensors, Micros and Supply dedicated to OBC and HV-DCDC applications), Infineon is ready to enable the future of EV charging.

What other use cases could fusion technology unlock?

I welcome your perspectives!
