Chapter President's Hari Raya Message - #strongertogether

Why #strongertogether ?

Imagine walking into your favorite well-known nasi kandar shop in Penang, and the tastes you expected were not there, the trademark flavors missing!

We are Malaysians, and it's an understatement that we are passionate about food, and the established eateries we patronize for an epic meal (whether nasi kandar or otherwise) with friends and family this festive season most likely defended and preserved a carefully passed recipe and preparation methods from generation to generation, fearlessly protecting it from deviation or dilution.

What does nasi kandar have to do with PMI Malaysia Chapter? ??

Our refreshed strategy presented at the 25th Chapter AGM

As PMI Malaysia Chapter, our refreshed vision is to "be known as the champions of project management..."

But as we embark on this journey, let's take a minute to ask ourselves:

  • What are we known for as a chapter, or what is our recipe that makes us unique?
  • Is this recipe attractive, enhancing the value and desirability of our chapter membership?
  • Are we passing down that recipe, empowering others to embrace it and perfect it?

Tremendous opportunities lie ahead, but our fundamentals of #strongertogether must be in place to consistently deliver our unique recipe as the champions of project management, consistent with PMI's Culture Values of "together we can".

This realignment with PMI's Culture Values is a throwback to our deep history with the institute as the oldest chapter in APAC, established almost three decades ago on October 1st, 1994.

However, our retention rate shows that we have a vast potential to unlock, with a marginal 5% of our active members with more than 20 years of project management experience.

Snippet from PMI Strateic Plan 2021 - 2025

If we now take that and overlay the PMI's strategic target audience above retrospectively, you will agree that a 105-year-old project management professional would have no less than 70 years of experience.

No less than astounding, and we have a problem statement in itself!

What we are trying to achieve as your board

The question is how do we really attract and retain the #changemaker 5 to 105 year-old target audience, reunite and reemerge as #strongertogether?

We can take a lesson from the trademark nasi kandar example by:

Rediscovering our recipe, empower others with that formula and trust that they will deliver and perfect it.

My commitment as your chapter president is to advocate and protect PMI's and our values of "together we can" by:

  • Building deep, trusting relationships that help us work towards our mission together.
  • Using our shared purpose to unite us as a community and drive us forward to create an impact.
