Chapter One
We are incredibly excited to be launching the Live Rocket TV Network & Retail Studio in New York City’s Seaport District. Now more than ever, the world is looking for new ways to shop, and we have the answers.
As a true omni-channel platform - Live Rocket strikes a balance of content and commerce, served to shoppers in three unique yet unified methods: A global native digital platform, traditional live television, and an in-person & unique store experience.
Over the course of the next six months, we’ll reveal the amazingly talented creative minds and renowned personalities who will serve as the driving force behind Live Rocket. Altogether, as a recent Forbes news item explained of our vision, “Live Rocket is a cross between QVC, Fiorucci, and Andy Warhol’s Factory.” Which really just means a destination for discovery - and when the time is right - and it will be - a very cool place to hang out.
And QVC & HSN is, indeed, where I cut my teeth, or perhaps almost got them knocked out, alongside my former colleague, the titan Barry Diller. In our sixteen years of working together, he used to often tell me, “Of course you’ll make stupid mistakes in the beginning, but just don’t make more than our investment will allow, or I’ll kill you.” In other words - you were always guilty until proven successful.
Such was the case with Joy Mangano, founder of the Miracle Mop and the subject of the David O. Russell-directed film Joy, where Bradley Cooper played me in the film. Rest assured I will mention that fact often and forever.
When I became CEO of HSN I fought like a madman with Diller and COO Victor Kaufman to put our steam behind this concept that I knew had great potential. We acquired Mangano’s ailing Miracle Mop business for $10 million, and soon turned it into a $100M+ empire.
Four years ago, I took a forced respite from the shopping world to produce a documentary film about someone who certainly never shopped himself or even owned a television: Bill Cunningham. Spending time getting to know the revered photographer and fashion historian began nearly three years of research and reviewing my “by-chance” one four-hour interview with him in 1993 that resulted in “The Times of Bill Cunningham.” Narrated by Sarah Jessica Parker and exploring the over-sixty years of Cunningham’s career, the film, allows us to see his special and unwavering dedication that made him such a beloved giant of New York City’s and Paris’s fashion and society scenes. Not surprisingly, this undertaking has given me a newfound strength and fortitude to begin this next chapter as the creator of Live Rocket.
We have a lot to prove, but in addition to our arsenal of industry vets and trailblazing creators, we’ve got major moxie. We also have super open-minded collaborators in the Howard Hughes Corporation at the Seaport District. The result will be a groundbreaking, omnichannel distribution method for products and content that you won’t find anywhere else on the planet.
Commencing countdown...
