Chapter One: Divine Guidance in Leadership

Proverbs 16:9 : “In their hearts, humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”

As leaders, we often find ourselves at the very real and human intersection of ambition and humility, seeking to chart a course for ourselves and those we lead, while recognizing the multitude of variables we simply cannot control or even, at times, account for. Recognizing the sovereign hand of God in every step we take, and our own personal plans and desires, beautifully encapsulates the tension between ambition and humility. Lets further break this down.

The Human Heart and Mind: A Wellspring of Plans

In the realm of leadership, planning is not merely a practical exercise; it is a reflection of the desires, aspirations, and vision residing within the human heart and mind. We strategize, organize, and meticulously outline our paths forward, drawing upon our experiences, expertise, and insights. We craft blueprints for success, envisioning the fulfillment of our objectives and the realization of our goals. Indeed, the human heart and mind is a wellspring of plans, teeming with hopes and dreams for the future.

Divine Intervention: The Lord Establishes Steps

However, amidst our fervent planning and calculated endeavors, we encounter a profound truth: the Lord is the ultimate arbiter of our destinies. While we may meticulously plot our courses, it is God who ultimately establishes our steps. His sovereignty transcends our schemes and strategies, weaving His divine purposes into the fabric of our leadership journeys; assuming we are willing to listen.

Embracing Divine Guidance

What, then, does it mean to embrace divine guidance in leadership? It entails a humble acknowledgment of our finite understanding and a steadfast reliance on God’s infinite wisdom. It requires us to surrender our plans at the feet of the Almighty, recognizing that His ways are higher, His thoughts loftier than our own. Additionally, God created us in his image and likeness. God is in us. When we say we divine an idea what we really mean is the divinity (God) that exists in all of us has been listened to and acknowledged.

Cultivating Spiritual Discernment

This is a very real challenge that requires a practice and practice to achieve. Divine guidance beckons us to cultivate spiritual discernment, attuning our hearts to the gentle whisper of the Holy Spirit amidst the clamor of competing voices. It invites us to seek God earnestly in prayer, inviting His counsel and direction into every facet of our leadership endeavors. As we commune with the Divine, our eyes are opened to perceive the hidden pathways He has ordained for us, leading us with unwavering assurance and steadfast grace. While this is necessary it is wholly insufficient in and of itself. We must create action.

The Intersection of Faith and Action

Yet, divine guidance does not absolve us of our responsibility to act. Rather, it infuses our actions with purpose and conviction, guiding our steps along the path of righteousness and integrity. It emboldens us to step out in faith, trusting that God’s providence will unfurl before us as we journey forward in obedience and humility.

Wisdom in Leadership

Moreover, divine guidance imparts wisdom—the wisdom to discern the seasons of change, the courage to embrace uncertainty, and the humility to acknowledge our limitations. It compels us to seek counsel from teammates and colleagues that God has placed in our path and the wellspring of Scripture, drawing wisdom from its timeless truths to navigate the complexities of leadership with prudence and discernment; much like you are doing now by reading this book and the scripture contained herein.

The Legacy of Divine Guidance

In the annals of history, we find myriad examples of leaders who walked in the footsteps of divine guidance. From the patriarchs of old to the prophets, kings, and apostles, their lives bear witness to the transformative power of God’s guiding hand. Their legacies endure as testaments to the enduring truth of Proverbs 16:9, reminding us that though we may plan our course, it is the Lord who establishes our steps.

Conclusion: Walking in Faith

?As we navigate the dynamic landscape of leadership, let us anchor our hearts in the unshakable truth of divine guidance. Let us humbly submit our plans to the sovereign will of God, trusting that He, who made us and those we lead, holds the universe in His hands and will guide us with unerring wisdom and steadfast grace. May we walk in faith, knowing that in His providence, our steps are established, and our destinies aligned and secured. Go forward with great confidence in knowing this these truths.

Lead well!

What a thoughtful passage John O'Grady. Leaning in to the Word and quieting all of the external stimuli to really listen to that still quiet voice takes practice. This work is so needed and I’ll be cheering you on until you finish your book.
