Chapter 9 "THE 20TH-CENTURY AVANT-GARDE" and the new creator of sculpture in ceramic

CHAPTER 9 Blossomed of contemporary Spanish ceramic art.

The new language of ceramic material in contemporary art had no stop developing in ways never imagined before. The established criteria for the use of ceramic material are already part of the glorious past of the history of ceramic art. One of the most transgressive Spanish ceramist creators was Mrs. Elena Colmeiro González. She was born in 1932, in the town of Silleda, located in the province of Pontevedra. She trained as a ceramic creator at the National Ceramic School of Buenos Aires, founded by the Spanish ceramic creator Fernando Arranz, who was a student of Spanish ceramicist Daniel Zuloaga. When in Spain, Elena Colmeiro developed her own style of ceramic art, based on the observation of broken fragments of ceramic pieces. She improved her ceramic technique by traveling to countries such as Holland, the United States, Italy and Poland, researching on glazes and high-temperature ceramic clays, thereby becoming one of the first Spanish creators to use these ceramic materials. After that time, she moved from her formalist style to a informalism aesthetic in her new ceramic creations. Elena Colmeiro drove ceramic creation beyond any artistic vision known. From small ceramic sculptures to large works, even working with non-ceramic materials, such as glass and wood. Elena Colmeiro was a transgressive visionary creator who understood the enormous possibilities of contemporary ceramic art.

The next artist is considered one of the most important Spanish ceramic creators, who placed Spain in the mainstream of contemporary ceramic art. Also, pupil of the great innovator of Spanish ceramic art Alfonso Blat. It is a great pleasure to introduce to one of the most outstanding contemporary ceramic creators, Mr. Enric Mestre i Estellés. He was born in 1936, in the town of Alboraya, located in the province of Valencia. His ceramic work is inspired by the man-made environment that surrounds his own studio. A place shared between industrial and agricultural areas. As a result, Enric Mestre creates a purely geometric ceramic work with clear surfaces, avoiding traditional ornaments. His complex creations are both architectural design and geometric sculpture. Each and every one of his ceramic creations need time, the time necessary to conceive them and also time to reflect when in front of them. Their creations are based on meticulous scientific research on high-temperature ceramic pastes and glazes. Enric Mestre embodies a generation of ceramic creators who were the result of the efforts of those innovators of Spanish ceramic art. Today, in the 21st century, they have become influencers of the new generations of Spanish ceramic creators.
