Michael Dong
Subject matter expert in HPLC, CMC, and pharm analysis. PhD in analytical chemistry. Author of bestseller HPLC book and 130 articles.
I am looking for two reviewers for my final draft of Chapter 3 on "HPLC Columns and Trends" for the second edition of my HPLC book (Wiley, 2018). The book is written at the basic/intermediate level.
Requirements: A practitioner of HPLC/UHPLC with at least 2 years of hands-on experience (UHPLC and pharmaceutical experience preferred). Willingness to read and review draft (2 hours or more) on technical content, clarity and potential issues.
Benefits: To read an overview of HPLC columns (29 pages with 31 figures, 1 Tables, and 38 references). Will be acknowledged in the preface section in the published book.
Please respond on LinkedIn with your direct email address, and indicate your chapter preference (including chapter # and topic). Timeline is 2 weeks. My email is michael@mwd-consulting/com

3.1 SCOPE
The HPLC column is the heart of an HPLC system. It holds the support media for the stationary phase that provides differential retention of sample components. This chapter offers a concise overview of HPLC columns and their modern trends. Basic HPLC column parameters such as column types (silica, polymer), modes (NPC, RPC, IEC, SEC, SFC, HILIC, HIC, MMC, chiral), dimensions (preparative, analytical, narrow-bore, micro LC), and packing characteristics (particle and pore size, bonding chemistry) are presented with recent column trends (high-purity silica, hybrid particles, superficially porous particles (SPP), novel bonding chemistries, and UHPLC columns packed with of sub-3 and sub-2 mm particles).
The benefits of shorter and narrower columns packed with smaller particles (Fast LC, UHPLC, micro LC) are described. Guard columns and specialty columns are discussed together with overall column selection recommendations. For more detailed discussions on column technologies and fundamentals, the reader is referred to Uwe Neue’s comprehensive book on HPLC columns,1 other textbooks,2–7 and journal articles.8-9 Other useful resources include manufacturers’ websites on current column products. As in other chapters, the focus is on reversed-phase HPLC columns for small molecules analysis, which represents a major fraction all HPLC applications. A glossary of terminologies on column and related instrumental aspects is included here. Information on column operation is found in Chapter 7. Additional HPLC and UHPLC applications are found in Chapters 5, 9, 12 and 13 including those for large biomolecules.
