Chapter 16 | THE ROLE OF BIOACTIVE NUTRIENTS IN LONGEVITY
I’m about halfway through the newly published, #1 Best Seller, Codes of Longevity and I’m LOVING it. You’ll love it to if you want more health and happiness in your life.
I’ve been reading and then sharing my thoughts about one chapter at a time to encourage you to learn and live all the longevity brilliance Melissa Peterson has packed into this amazing book. This chapter, by Dr. Charlie Ware, focuses on a few new concepts for me: nutritional status, precision nutrition, and bioactive nutrients. Charlie says when you know your genetic blueprint, “you hold the key to better understanding how to choose foods that are most optimal for you, making fad diets and one size fits all approaches to health a thing of the past.†And making the future for you a longer, healthier, and happier one.
That’s what I want for you! (and for me, too)
Dr. Charlie Ware is on a mission to develop concierge, precision, high-performance programs designed to optimize human performance. He distills complex and innovative medical concepts into bite-sized, understandable, and actionable pearls of wisdom. His method helps people take back control of their health and feel like themselves again.
Here are a few of the ‘pearls’ that I took away from his chapter.
“Our nutritional status plays in key physiological processes such as cognitive function and immune response, as well as DNA methylation, which alters gene expression.â€
“A poor nutritional status, caused either by an unhealthy diet or by malabsorption of bioactive nutrients, is a major risk factor for many chronic diseases and early lowered lifespans.â€
“... diets rich in seafood and sea vegetables not only enhances our nutritional status but have been linked to increases in epigenetic ages.â€
“Nutritional status, which can be measured by biochemical, metabolic testing and specific genetic markers, has a relational response to physiological processes used as markers to measure aging, such as genomic instability, telomere attrition, epigenetic alterations, loss of proteostasis, deregulation of nutrient-sensing/signaling, mitochondrial dysfunction, cellular senescence, stem cell exhaustion, and alteration of intercellular communication.â€
“Our diet and, ultimately, our nutritional status, can help us achieve a life that spans well beyond the typical age.â€
He writes that precision nutrition “can give you access to the unique bioactive nutrients tailored to your genetic code. The best way to go about this is to have a Nutrigenomic coach map out a specific plan for you. The bioactive nutrients contained in the foods you are “prescribed†will help optimize your health and protect you from cardiovascular diseases, cancers, neurodegenerative diseases, and age-related degenerative diseases.â€
“... our nutritional choices can slow or even reverse some of these processes to improve health, decrease the chance of disease, and give rise to the promise of longevity.â€
He describes a variety of bioactive nutrients “whose role is to pass specific information between genes and pertinent bio-engineering processes.â€
A FEW EXAMPLES OF BIOACTIVE NUTRIENTS
Extra Virgin Olive Oil is “the primary oil to consume, for its anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and antioxidant properties, as well as its modulation of glucose/lipid metabolism.†Check out our Partners in Happy to try the cleanest, best olive oil on earth that I’ve been able to find.
Herbs and spices: ginger, turmeric, basil, rosemary, caffeic acid, luteolin, resveratrol, gingerol, quercetin, curcumin, capsaicin, and cinnamaldehyde to name a few. Read Charlie’s chapter to learn all the specific health and longevity benefits the human body derives from these bioactive nutrients.
The good doc Charlie says, “Indeed, one of my biggest issues with the typical American diet, aside from the large quantities of saturated fats, sugars, and simple carbohydrates, is the lack of herbs and spices to help with the inflammation ingested.â€
Oh, he also says certain of those herbs and spices listed above “helps stimulates the immune response to many pathogens.â€
If all this isn’t enough (and it certainly is for me), the doc writes “that some organisms fed their optimal genetic nutrients have lived up to 50% longer than their control counterparts.â€
So, what will you be doing when I’m 120 years old and still happy living? ?
