The neon-tinged dawn seeped through the smart-tint windows, gradually illuminating Esme's cramped pod. She stirred, her neural implant already buzzing with the day's priorities. No need for an alarm when your brain's jacked into the grid.
"Morning, Ez," purred her AI, its voice a silky tendril in her mind. "Cortisol levels optimal. Initiating wake sequence."
Esme's eyes fluttered open, retinal displays flickering to life. The room's bare walls bloomed with augmented reality feeds—news, markets, social metrics—all curated by her AI companion.
"Thanks, Chica," she mumbled, muscle memory guiding her hand to the bedside induction pad. Her latest-gen flexscreen unfurled at her touch, a gossamer-thin sheet of interactive photonics.
Chica's avatar—a pulsing, fractal orb—materialised above the screen. "Your 0900 with Tokyo's been pushed. Rerouting your morning. Shall I order the usual from the vert farm downstairs?"
Esme nodded, her thoughts triggering a cascade of morning routines. The pod's systems hummed to life, adjusting temperature, initiating hygiene protocols. She padded to the sanitisation cube, letting sonic waves and UV light scour her skin.
"Global unrest index up 2.3%," Chica reported. "Recommending an alt route to the office. Also, your synaptic booster subscription's due for renewal. Thoughts?"

Esme grunted, mind racing through decision trees Nexus presented directly to her visual cortex. "Renew for three months. And gimme a drone view of that new route."
As she slipped into a graphene bodysuit, a holographic map bloomed before her. Chica highlighted potential choke points, overlaying real-time data streams from thousands of urban sensors.
"Your cortical bandwidth's spiking," Chica observed. "Dialling back the info density. Remember, Z, I'm here to filter the noise."
Esme smirked. Even in 2030, the human mind still needed its AI crutch to navigate the data deluge. She grabbed her multi-spectrum contacts, blinking them into place. The world sharpened, layers of augmented reality settling over her vision like a second skin.
"Ready to dive in?" Chica asked, its presence a comforting hum at the base of her skull.
Esme took a deep breath, centring herself in the maelstrom of information. "Always," she replied, stepping out into the hyper-connected urban jungle.
Chica - a silent guardian in her neural pathways, ready to interpret, filter, and guide her through another day in this brave new world.
