Evie and Earheart

Chapter 1 - Little Yellow

Evie lay in her bed and closed her eyes. She was thinking about all the wonderful things that had happened on their family holiday. They had just been to America and had such an amazing time. Evie and her little brother Ezra, were splashing in the shores of California as the sun gave them a warm hug. There are so many happy memories for Evie to treasure forever ; the ice cream scoops the size of their faces, the freshly baked pretzels and the boat trip to see the friendly bottlenose dolphins off of San Francisco. But the most exciting day for Evie, was when they walked along the beach and found an old rope tied to a tree. They jumped on the rope and swung over the water. Splash! As she plunged into the clear turquoise ocean, she watched the sunset over the horizon. But wait… twinkling on the shore something caught Evie’s eye. Without a moment’s hesitation, Evie swam to shore and ran over curiously to see what it was. Her mother chased after her.

“Look mum,” Evie exclaimed, “it’s a little plane!”

“So it is.” Her mother replied kindly, “it’s very old.”

“Please can I keep it?” Evie begged. “I promise to be very careful with it.”

Evie beamed as she remembered that day. Now back at home she carefully placed her new favourite souvenir on her bookshelf. There was substantial damage on one of the wings to suggest it had been well used. But in good conscience, Evie had kept it very well protected throughout the whole journey home ; She knew how delicate this little plane was and she was determined to keep it safe. It’s golden nose, with a gold propeller had caught her eye on the shore, the body was as bright as the sunshine. It was not like any planes Evie had ever been on, or even seen. This plane had two wings stacked on top of each other and only one seat. It was paper thin and as light as a feather to hold.

That lonely seat called out to Evie, as if she belonged on it.

Whilst she placed the little yellow plane down, she whispered “There you go.” It stood proudly in the centre of Evie’s bookshelf. Evie strolled over to her bed and closed her eyes peacefully. She dreamt about America and reliving her favourite day.

In the morning, Evie bounced out of bed and shot to her little yellow plane. Spinning the golden propellers, she muttered: “I’d love to go on an adventure with you.”

POOF

“Aarrrgggh” a woman screamed!

“AAHHH” Evie exclaimed!

“Who are? How did?” Evie couldn’t finish her sentences, her heart pounding.

“This was not what I was expecting. But I heard adventure! Anyhoo, I’m glad you speak English.” the woman pronounced “you haven’t by any chance see where I landed the plane?” She continued in a well-spoken and kindly manner.

“Ummmm” Evie looked perplexed at this woman in a very unusual outfit, with what appeared to be goggles on her head.

“Well girl, spit it out! We haven’t got all day if you are my co-pilot and going to lead us on our new venture.” She continued.

Evie explained that the only plane she’d been on recently was that to America but now she is back home in London.

“London?!” The woman howled with excitement, “We are in London, as in the capital of England. That London?” The strangely dressed woman seemed very excited about this.

“Well yes, I just got off the plane yesterday.” Evie beamed

“Golly gosh, isn’t this just marvellous. Here I was thinking we were flying one way, when all along we are in Europe. Well I never.”

“So, I guess you are well equipped young pilot yourself! You are rather young to have flown all the way from America to England, how did you do it?” The woman asked inquisitively.

Evie paused for a moment; she didn’t want to disappoint this very excited yet rather strange looking woman.

“Oh, well you see” Evie paused for a moment, thoughts racing round her mind, “my favourite trip was actually to Italy. We flew in a huge plane that time.” Evie reasoned that she wasn’t actually lying and the woman seemed so excited to talk about flying, after all Evie thought she would make a fantastic pilot.

“Oh my ,oh my! I cannot believe you have so much experience!” The woman’s smile lit up Evie’s room as she stood up tall and calmly continued: “Well young lady, I must concede to your greater knowledge and you, Evie, are to lead us to the unknown lands. I am at your disposal Captain!”

Evie’s brain was swirling with excitement, ‘adventure’ she thought to herself ‘captain’ she repeated. Her eyes wide open trying to understand what was happening. Evie then clenched her eyes shut and tried to blink. “Wake up. Wake up” she muttered

“So what shall I call you? Captain…” The woman paused as if to let Evie finish the sentence.

“Oh I’m Evie, nice to meet you”

“Captain Evie.” The woman tried to speak the Queen’s English but Evie just giggled.

“Nice to make your acquaintance Captain Evie, I am your co-pilot Amelia.” The woman put out her hand to shake Evie’s.

“Amelia?” Evie questioned as she stared at the woman, she was determined that after hearing her name that she recognized Amelia.

“But before we embark on our exciting adventure” Amelia exclaimed “first things first, breakfast!”

Before Evie could stop Amelia, she had bolted out of Evie’s room down the stairs. It sounded like a stampede of rhinos stomping down the stair, Evie blamed that on the incredibly large boots Amelia had on.

As Evie chased after Amelia, she begged her to keep quiet as her little brother was sound as sleep in his bedroom.

“Evie! What on earth are you doing?” A voice from upstairs yelled down to them.

This was worse than waking up Ezra… “Mum is going to kill me!” Evie felt nauseous at the very thought of her mum coming downstairs.

Too late.
