The Agile Awakening

Part 1 - Asha’s Moment of Truth

Asha always prided herself in being a Scrum Master who could steer the ship through any storm. But that day, as she stood before her team, she felt the weight of a ship that seemed to be sinking. The sprint had been a disaster, and the air was thick with frustration.

"Another sprint with incomplete stories! This is becoming a pattern, and it's unacceptable," she said, trying to keep her voice steady.

Martin, the Product Owner, shot back, "Maybe if the team had a clearer direction and better support, we wouldn't be in this mess!"

His words stung. Asha wanted to argue, to defend her methods, but then Faiz, Engineering Manager, chimed in, "It's not just about direction. We're drowning in technical debt because we're always rushing to meet impossible deadlines!"

The room erupted into chaos, with everyone speaking over each other, pointing fingers, laying blame. Asha felt the meeting slipping away along with team's morale, and with it, her confidence in our Scrum practices.

It was then, amidst the heated exchange, that a moment of clarity struck her. We were all so entrenched in our roles, so focused on our individual challenges, that we have lost sight of what Agile was truly about—collaboration, adaptation, and collective ownership.

She took a deep breath and raised her hand, signaling for silence. "I hear you all," She began, her voice firmer now. "It's clear that our current approach isn't working, and it's time for a change. Not just in our processes, but in our mindset."

She looked around the room, making eye contact with each team member. "We're in this together. It's not 'us versus them.' We need to stop seeing each other as adversaries and start seeing each other as partners in need of help."

The room fell silent. It was the first time in a long time that the team had all truly listened to each other. Asha knew that this was the start of a journey. Together, with the team she would rebuild Scrum practices, not just to deliver software but to deliver on the promise of Agile—to create something greater than the sum of our parts.

A/A, I have a very rudimentary question, how do you find time to work on something like this, when you are always over-occupied by all the things, considering the responsibilities of the role you have in your organisation!
