Chaos
The Power of a Centered Narrative in Uncertain Times
Chaos is inevitable. It arrives unannounced, disrupting plans, shifting priorities, and testing our ability to stay grounded. Some see chaos as a force of destruction, but I see it as an invitation—an opportunity to redefine, reposition, and reinforce what truly matters.
The ability to remain centered during uncertain times doesn’t come from controlling the chaos; it comes from knowing who you are within it. This is where the power of narrative takes hold. Your story, your lived experiences, values, and vision act as an anchor, giving you clarity when everything around you feels unstable.
In the face of uncertainty, what part of your narrative keeps you grounded?
NOW: Realization and Reflection for Today
Uncertainty often feels like a storm, pulling us in different directions, and making us question our footing. But when we understand our narrative, our why, our throughline, we create a center of gravity that holds, no matter the external forces at play.
Here’s what I’ve come to realize:
Narrative is Stability: The stories we tell ourselves shape our perception of chaos. A strong, well-defined narrative provides the stability needed to navigate uncertainty without losing direction.
Uncertainty Doesn’t Equal Stagnation: Just because the path ahead is unclear doesn’t mean we stop moving. Knowing your core values allows you to make decisions even in the unknown.
Reinvention is Inevitable: Chaos accelerates change. Those who can embrace reinvention without losing their essence are the ones who emerge stronger.
Upon Reflection:
The Now is an invitation to take inventory. To recognize the elements of your story that have sustained you through chaos before and will again.
NEW: Learning and Experimentation for Tomorrow
To stay centered in uncertainty, we must experiment. Not to create more control, but to expand our capacity to navigate the unknown with confidence.
Here’s how I’m approaching it:
1. Reaffirm the Core of My Narrative
Write down the three principles that have defined my journey. These serve as my compass, ensuring my decisions align with what matters most.
2. Embrace Small, Calculated Risks
The only way to grow within chaos is to engage with it. I’ll experiment with stepping into spaces that challenge me, whether through new projects, conversations, or untested ideas.
Create a “Chaos-Proof” Mindset
Instead of resisting uncertainty, I’m working on reframing it as a force for clarity. Each moment of disruption is a chance to strengthen the foundation of my narrative.

Ask yourself:
NEXT: Vision for Future Possibilities
Imagine a future where chaos no longer dictates your choices, but instead serves as a proving ground for your narrative. The ability to stay centered in uncertainty isn’t just a skill. It’s a competitive advantage in a world that’s constantly shifting.
This future belongs to those who:
Envision the future:
Payoff: The Strength of a Centered Narrative
Chaos will always be part of the equation. The difference between those who thrive and those who struggle isn’t the ability to avoid it, but the ability to remain centered within it.
In the Now, reflect on the elements of your narrative that have sustained you.
In the New, experiment with reframing chaos as a tool for clarity.
In the Next, step into uncertainty with the confidence that your narrative will hold.
So, here’s your challenge: Instead of fearing uncertainty, lean into it. Use your story as a stabilizer. The more you trust your narrative, the more powerful it becomes—and the more unshakable you become in the face of chaos.
Your narrative is your compass. Let it be your centering tool.

I am a Narratologist and my craft is to help others find and design their unique form of self-expression. For companies, it is about alignment around a Narrative Northstar and the mission to achieve it. For executives over 45, it is about owning your narrative equity and actively sharing or spending it. For movements, it is about generating visible narrative equity that inspires a call to action.
My centering narrative is about building human connection.

3 周My dear Tobin, spot on as always. The problem I still have is feeling uncertain even when centered. But in a way, that's what this post is all about. It's a constant that we deal with best when we: "Stay in the centre..."
