Dear Empowered Women,

There’s nothing like staring double standards in the face to remind you just how pervasive and damaging gendered language can be.

Research has shown that gendered language in job advertisements can significantly deter women from applying. For instance, a study found that over half (52%) of UK job adverts used gender-biased wording, disadvantaging female candidates even before they apply (Diversity Trust). Additionally, using gendered language can perpetuate regressive gender norms and negatively impact women's labor market participation (World Bank).

Let's explore how our words shape perceptions, reinforce biases, and impact the careers and lives of women.

Have you met Emma?

Emma, a dedicated project manager in a global financial services company approached me because she felt her contributions were often undermined by gendered language. Her passion was frequently labeled as aggression, and her determination was described as being pushy. Through our coaching, Emma learned to address these biases directly, advocating for herself and courageously educating her peers on the impact of their words. This shift improved her professional relationships and also boosted her confidence and career trajectory.

Let's explore the impact of Gendered Language

Gendered language is a significant barrier to equality. Consciously or unconsciously, it perpetuates stereotypes, reinforces biases, and undermines women's contributions in all areas of life.

Have you ever been described as...

  • Aggressive
  • Emotional
  • Cold
  • Pushy
  • Feisty
  • Calculated
  • Ruthless
  • Obsessive
  • Difficult
  • Controlling
  • Sensitive

These words might seem minor at first glance, but imagine hearing them in feedback, appraisals, about colleagues, in the media, at home, or from friends.

It all adds up, like thousands of paper cuts, influencing how you are perceived, how you see yourself, your opportunities to advance, and your overall fulfilment at work.

Why It Matters in the New Paradigm vs. Traditional Leadership

  • New Paradigm: Emphasises respect, equity, and inclusion, recognising that our language shapes our culture and the opportunities available to everyone.
  • Traditional Leadership: Often overlooks the impact of language, maintaining biases and stereotypes that hinder progress.

How do we change the narrative?

  1. Reflect on Your Language: Be mindful of the words you use. Are they reinforcing stereotypes? Are they fair and objective?
  2. Call Out Bias: When you hear gendered language, speak up. Educate others about its impact and encourage them to choose their words more carefully.
  3. Support Each Other: Engage in micro moments of allyship. Support and amplify women's voices, even more those of minority women.
  4. Promote Inclusive Language: Encourage the use of language that values contributions without bias. For example, describe a woman as determined instead of feisty, or strategic instead of calculated.

Call to Action for the Week

This week, I invite you to reflect on the language you use and hear. When you notice gendered language, take a moment to address it constructively. Start a conversation about its impact and suggest more inclusive alternatives. Notice how these small changes can influence the environment around you and support gender equality.

At the end of the day, words matter. They shape our worldviews, influence our actions, and affect how we see ourselves and others. By being mindful of our language and actively working to change it, we can help create a more equitable and inclusive environment for everyone.

Change your words. Change the narrative.

Together, we can make a difference with our Seat At The Table.

I'm rooting for your success,

Just like the saying goes: "Words hurt." The same goes for the fact that words indeed do hold power and it always has as proven throughout human history.
