Changing Our Relationship with Time

Changing Our Relationship with Time

How often do you find yourself thinking there are simply not enough hours in the day? Feeling overwhelmed about time, or what feels like a lack of it, is a common struggle--especially for busy leaders. Learning how to manage your time, finding a comfortable balance between work and life, and feeling confident about what you can achieve in a day, week, or month can be tricky. And when so many of the common time management strategies we pursue aren’t very effective, it’s easy to become frustrated.

In our?time management?workshop last month with Prerika Agarwal, CEO of Inspiration Careers, we dug deep into the overwhelm around time, where it comes from, and ways to overcome it. Managing our time is a layered process, but it turns out, what so many of us consider time management, like making to-do lists and setting meeting reminders, in reality, is much more. It’s about identifying your priorities, being aware of where your time goes, productivity and efficiency, and ownership of your time.

While it doesn’t always feel like it, the truth is,?we?control our time. And we can decide and choose how we’re going to use it. And that includes scheduling time to rest and saying no to things that don’t align, as much as it does scheduling work tasks and meetings.

Today’s newsletter is an opportunity to begin a new relationship with time. To peel back the layers of your feelings, examine where you feel overwhelmed and where you feel empowered, and how you can begin to take ownership of your schedule.

Write.

An opportunity to dig into what we might be missing in our leadership.

What does a lack of time look like for you? How does it feel? What would you do if you could manage your time better?

Wonder.

An opportunity to reimagine deeply embedded leadership structures and practices.

What do you believe you spend your time doing? Do you feel that the way you spend your time aligns with your personal values and priorities? Have you considered conducting a time audit to see how your beliefs about time management align with your reality?

Witness.

An opportunity to learn from overlooked perspectives.

“Everything has a tradeoff. When you say yes to something, when you put it on your calendar, when you give your time and energy to something, there is a tradeoff. What are you saying no to?”
