Changing the Narrative: Empowering Women-Owned Social Enterprises

Studies reveal significant disparities in the Canadian social entrepreneurship landscape, highlighting a pronounced gender gap. Male founders dominate, leaving women, especially those from underrepresented groups, struggling to be taken seriously in pitches and negotiations. Venture capital funds further amplify this divide, with 90-98% directed towards male entrepreneurs, compounding obstacles for women from marginalized backgrounds. ICTC’s new federally funded program “Changing the Narrative: Unleashing the Full Potential of Women-Owned Enterprises” is focused on empowering diverse women entrepreneurs who own or are launching social enterprises through mentorship, knowledge exchange, and networking.??

Over the program’s 29-month run, it will tackle the specific issues facing women-owned enterprises. Its collaborative ecosystem approach will span five provinces; Ontario, New Brunswick, Manitoba, Quebec, and Alberta, engaging with 500 women-owned businesses, 150 mentors, 36 subject-matter experts, and up to 10 community organizations that support Black women and minority groups. Further, the program’s pitch events will allow participants to showcase their innovations and ideas to potential investors.?

We were thrilled to launch this new program alongside the Honourable Marci Ien, Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth, who announced the new government funding at our February 22nd Black History Month event in Toronto. The day was filled with enlightening discussions as we celebrated the stories and accomplishments of Black women who have played pivotal roles in Canada's digital economy. Our phenomenal panelists, Maudeleine Myrthil, Christine Dikonguè, Fabierre Bonaparte, and Miranda McKie, and keynote speaker, Ashley Wright, brought forward new perspectives and actionable insights to help us all move forward towards a more equitable future.?
