Changing lives through adoption, one family at a time

As we mark National Adoption Month this November, we reflect on the incredible strength, compassion and love demonstrated by families who have chosen to open their hearts and homes through adoption. We not only celebrate the families built through adoption but also acknowledge the profound impact that these families have on the lives of children in need of loving, permanent homes.

Every child deserves the chance to grow up in a safe, nurturing environment where they are loved and valued, and adoptive parents play an essential role in making this a reality. Over the last decade, more than 19,300 children have gotten the chance they deserve to love and be loved and to reach their fullest potential, thanks to families across our state that chose to adopt through Illinois DCFS.

There is still much work to be done. In Illinois, 18,850 children from diverse backgrounds are waiting for loving homes. They all share a fundamental need—a family to call their own. This month, we celebrate those who have chosen to adopt and encourage others to consider learning more about becoming a foster and/or adoptive parent or understand how they can make a lasting effect on a child through guardianship.

Opening your heart and your home through adoption is a life-changing decision, one that requires a deep commitment, patience and a willingness to help children heal and grow. But it is also a deeply rewarding experience that can change a child's life and your family in the best possible ways.
