Changing In-Office Positions To Remote Jobs

Changing In-Office Positions To Remote Jobs

What should you do if you want or need to continue working remotely, your employer plans RTO, and the only jobs you see are in an office environment?

What if you find the perfect job, but it's in office when you want remote?

How about if you find the perfect job, but it's not local, and you don't want to move?

Of if you moved to the perfect place to ride out the pandemic, you want to change jobs, but there's nothing available locally (especially in a small or resort community)?

And many family situations require you to WFH, children, family health issues, concern about Covid, and long haul Covid issues are some of the reasons people want to continue working from home. Reluctance to waste commuting costs, or lose 10% of your life commuting to work are also common reasons to seek remote jobs. And many like the freedom of remote work, travelling while working, wearing sweats to work, or spending the work day with Fido or Kitty can make your workday more enjoyable. Many simply see they can be more productive and effective working from home.

If any of the above applies to you, you're probably wondering how you could change the perfect in-office position to a WFH job.

Good thing there's a way to accomplish this - Here are some hints:

  1. HR Can't Make This Change:?HR and recruiters will screen you out, and block you from interviews if you inform them that you want to work remote, for a job that's listed as in-office. There's a simple explanation: You won't meet requirements, and HR/Recruiting doesn't have the power to change requirements, only the power to deny you interviews.
  2. Hiring Managers Are Unlikely To Change Their Minds (initially):?Discussing your remote work desires with hiring managers almost never works early in the interview process. Here's why: They're still envisioning the job as in-office, so it's still a requirement. The hiring manager is still looking for an in-office new hire ... Instead, you need to get them to look for?YOU.
  3. Become The Best Answer To Their Problems:?When you can present yourself as the best answer to a hiring manager's problems, they're likely to move mountains to hire you. First you need to understand their current problems, not their past problems that are listed on job descriptions (most are 1+ years old).
  4. Approach After The Offer:?Your greatest leverage to change an in-office position to a remote job comes after you've received a job offer - because the hiring manager has made the decision they want you. At this point, you're likely to negotiate remote work as a condition of accepting the offer or suggest tradeoffs of salary, benefits, added workload, or other creative bargaining chips, in order to get employer agreement of a remote position.

Just because a job is posted as in-office, it doesn't mean you can't change it, after you get an employer to decide they want you.
