Changing to Biweekly!

Changing to Biweekly!

I am going to change from posting weekly to biweekly. Rather than skipping this week's, I will give a short newsletter today and a full one next week. I will need this change so that I can release my new projects, which I'll keep you updated on.

Indigenous and Allies are all welcome!

Let's get to it.

??Hero of the Week: Jody Wilson-Raybould

Jody Wilson-Raybould PC OBC KC, also known by her initials JWR and by her Kwak’wala name Puglaas, is a Canadian lawyer, author, and former politician who served as a member of Parliament for the British Columbia riding of Vancouver Granville from 2015 to 2021. Throughout her work, Jody has navigated complex challenges with strength, determination and an unwavering commitment to justice.

She has written three bestselling books, the political memoir “Indian” in the Cabinet: Speaking Truth to Power, which was a finalist for The Writers’ Trust Balsillie Prize for Public Policy and the Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing; From Where I Stand: Rebuilding Indigenous Nations for a Stronger Canada; and, her most recent, True Reconciliation: How to Be a Force For Change.?

"It wholly remains within our power to speak up,?and in speaking up, to help our system of government and our country continue to get better ...?both individually and collectively. That's why I've shared what I've learned. And I'm going to continue to do that." Jody Wilson-Raybould

??Music of the Week: Andrew Balfour

Andrew Balfour is a Cree composer and conductor from Winnipeg, Manitoba. He is the artistic director of the vocal ensemble Dead of Winter. Balfour was nominated for the 2023 The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences/The JUNO Awards Classical Album of the Year for Nagamo, recorded with musica intima vocal ensemble.

music intima and Andrew Balfour came together to create NAGAMO - a radical re-imagining of history through a concert and recording.

Of course, you can hear one of the songs on our Spotify playlist, IndigiBeats 365, where we add a song by Indigenous artists daily! This last week, we added songs by Tanya Tagaq, Susan Aglukark, and Marcel Gagnon. Leave us a comment on what artists you'd like to see highlighted on the playlist and in this section!

??3 Posts from this Week:

  • First Peoples' Cultural Council reminds us that they are one of the only Indigenous-led reporters on First Nations Languages. They provide so many services regarding culture and language, so make sure to check them out!

Indigenous partners across the country are carrying out projects that are not only good for the environment, but also provide reliable and affordable energy for their communities. They are retrofitting community buildings, carrying out renewable energy projects, and providing low?carbon home heating. Today’s announcement is a step to further advance Indigenous climate leadership and achieving Canada’s emissions reduction targets.” – The Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change

  • The Ontario Native Women's Association (ONWA) and the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario (RNAO) have entered into a collaborative partnership in order for ONWA to attain the designation of Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO). ONWA is part of the first cohort of Indigenous BPSO’s which will support ONWA in promoting the health, well-being and safety of Indigenous women across the province.

Jody Wilson Raybould is an authentic Canadian hero who, in the long standing common law tradition of the office of the Attorney General, faced, challenged and stared down unacceptable behavior of the Crown; then walked away with dignity.

The legacy of Jody Wilson-Raybould, or Puglaas, as a beacon of integrity and change in Canadian politics, is a narrative deeply enriched by her family roots. Her father, Bill Wilson, himself a formidable figure in First Nations leadership and Canadian politics, resides at Deep Creek, near my hometown of Williams Lake. I'll never forget my first meeting with Bill in the late 90's. Bill's influence on Jody's remarkable journey, underscored by her relentless pursuit of justice and her compelling contributions to literature on truth and reconciliation, reminds us of the powerful impact of familial legacy and local ties. It should be a point of pride for our community, knowing that the roots of such influential Canadian personalities are intertwined with our local narrative.
