Changing Americans' views on solving homelessness

“We’ve been flying blind when it comes to housing and homelessness, but it doesn’t have to be this way,” Rosanne Haggerty told a crowd in May during The Rockefeller Foundation’s first-ever TED Salon.

Haggerty cites success in communities across the U.S. that approach homelessness as a systems problem, not a personal failure.

Across the country, communities “...are rigorously coordinating the work of all of the actors in their system to see that homelessness is prevented as part of what they’re completely accountable for as a team,” shared Haggerty. “They aren’t arresting people because they’re homeless. They’re not forcing people out of sight or out of state.”

Why is listening to the voices of people with lived experience important to solve homelessness?

"When I was homeless, I struggled alone, unsure of where to turn. Now, I want to be the light that leads others out of the darkness, offering hope and helping them find the support they need in what feels like a hopeless situation." — Shalisa Gaines, Coordinated Entry System Coordinator ??Central MS CoC, Mississippi
