Changing the Air Force for dummies

Changing the Air Force for dummies

Change is hard, but let's get right to it.

If you're not on AFNET, you'll need middleware.

A summary of each:

  • Dronecon Hackathon - The Dronecon Hackathon aims to accelerate change by bringing diverse groups together, multiplying their ideas through a limited set of activities. There will be plenty of room to make wildly new things, as we see happening in Ukraine. Planning is ongoing with the 96 Operations Group, Emerald Spark, AFWERX, and the Navy, while hoping for collaboration with the 96 Test Wing and BRAVO Hackathon.
  • More comfortable uniforms needed for great power competition - Uniforms need to be more comfortable, and the material exists. People are getting out of the service because the uniforms are abrasive and hard to find. The blues pants, for instance, haven't been in stock above a size 26" in months. If we really care about retaining the best talent, we should prove it with comfort.
  • Efficiency scripts - Users need a library of scripts to help them manipulate and understand their files. I've made one useful script to create a CSV of a directory's file structure, all of its files and folders, and how they are organized. I've brought these results into an Excel sheet that allows for quick searching without mucking about in shared drive folders. This will especially help in unit inspections.
  • Office cheat-sheet: already made for distro - I've compiled an Excel workbook based on many cheat sheets for common applications, including Office 365, Windows 10/11, etc. It is mostly keystrokes / hotkeys, but there are other useful bits like Sharepoint and Power Automate. It has a How-to on the first worksheet. Most importantly, it has pivot tables and slicers so you can easily search or select filters to find what you're looking for.
  • DAF Vimium clone: "Vicarus" - Cloning the browser extensions "Vimium" and making a DAF or DOD-owned version would vastly improve troop efficiency as they accomplish tasks within their browser. It's already safe, low-code, and open source. This means that the DAF could easily "fork" it, or "clone" it, and start their own safe version. This would ensure maintenance and browser security requirements are safely implemented.
  • Change Edge start page - The default Edge start page, MSN, is full of clickbait and distractions. I'm sure it distracts users and burns useless hours through said clickbait.
  • Kill cable news in DoD workcenters and common areas - Cable news channels are ubiquitous in DoD work centers and common areas. They are exceedingly biased. By their nature, they are for-profit companies. They tend to take political sides in order to stir up emotional responses. Like ESPN's "Pardon the Interruption" or "First Take," they make their money by sowing division and creating narratives that people then take home and continue.
  • NIPR Claudes Petition to get Claude AI approved for NIPR use - It's like OpenAI but much better, smarter, and looks better. It is capable of tackling deep questions from obscure fields. It's been training in open beta using experts and researchers, which has allowed it to better fine-tune itself and not get mucked up.
  • Screens at the table - Dedicated tablets in front of each seat at conference tables. This would greatly enhance accessibility and engagement. No more printing slides, craning your neck, or sitting quietly while everyone assumes everyone can see what's on the projector screen. Much greater ability to collaborate on complex information like spreadsheets, rather than just going along with a slide deck.
  • The idea program program - Airmen find problems, have bright ideas, and sense what's wrong. Instead of accepting these, however, we demand they champion a solution.
  • Psychological Safety Center - The DAF needs a psychological safety center, much like the Air Force Safety Center. It would connect all of the nodes impacting psychological safety across the force, including survey data, access to medical care, educating people on psychological safety, and trouble areas. Perhaps there could even be a DHA accountability office within it, a sort of superpowered patient-advocate-ombudsman.
  • Greater text editor support - Vim and Typora - Requesting Vim and Typora to be standard on DAF computers, or at least available in the Software Center. Vim enables rapid typing and moving around a text file. Typora is great as a quick note-taker, and it allows for many markdown functions like math mode, easy headers / bullets, etc. Vim is open-source, while Typora is simple enough to build to our own specifications if needed.
  • Overwatch - A centralized unit that kills all the loose ends (old broken processes that only eat time and resources). This unit would have access to all process feedback from knowledge workers in the Air and Space Forces. Instead of having one or two continuous process improvement people per unit, this unit would be empowered to bring real change. Out with the old. No loose ends.
  • Stack Overflow style application for Q&A, idea and feature requests - Self-moderates to prevent unnecessary duplication of old questions. The DAF needs a "Stack Overflow for Teams" equivalent. Stack Overflow and Stack Exchange boards usually consist of quick questions and answers in blurb form that sometimes stretch into forum-sized posts (ie when posting code). It is a great concept because it uses a point / reputation point system to automatically moderate, allowing the most relevant questions and answers to rise to the top.
