Changes to NEBOSH Certificate NG1 & IG1 exams - what this means for Learners

The IG1 and NG1 exam will now be undertaken at home in what is called an “Open Book” exam.  Exam papers will be sent at a notified time and you will then have 24 hours to complete and return them.  The exam should only take a few hours to complete and the 24 hours is to meet the needs of all learners in different time zones around the world.

The exam itself has been changed to scenario based questions, where you will be given a set scenario(s) and asked questions which test the knowledge you would have gained studying the course.  You will be able to access books, but must document all the sources you reference.  This is extremely important as NEBOSH will be using software to check that answers are not just copied from textbooks.

After the exam you will be interviewed by a Tutor who will be checking that you have an understanding of the responses you gave in the exam along with checking your ID.

There is a misconception that this new exam will be easier and if you have this attitude with your exam preparation you will probably fail the exam.  You must not assume that because this exam is open book it will be easy, it will be more challenging than the previous NEBOSH exam as you will be expected to apply the knowledge you have gained. Unless you have a good understanding of the course you will find it very difficult to even know where to look things up.

You must fully revise the course before taking the exam and we suggest making detailed notes to refer to as you are undertaking the assessment.

The advantages are obvious in that you will not need to attend an exam centre, a relief to many given Covid 19.  Plus those who would have previously sat at a British council will pay less to sit the exam.

Open to QA issues and fraud. As you say let’s all go to my house for a get together.

This will be interesting especially if the delegate has 24hrs to complete, but I can't imagine a trainer conducting an interview at 2am, will this be upto the training provider to organise the interview?

@Thank you, professor. You have to take into account those who think that the test will be easier ... Thank you NEBOSH forever.

An excellent step forwards by NEBOSH. Many people have been seeking this type of exam for years. Yes it will be much more challenging, and will reflect real life much better than the memory tests of the past. A good dose of realism and a significant improvement in the utility of the exam. The interview will also be a huge benefit and will not only weed out copy/paste merchants (and cheats) but will also test the candidates ability to express H&S verbally - one of the most important skills that has not previously even been considered. Yes it will be harder for many people, but if it is kept going past COVID it will be an excelent baseline for many other tests to come.

Certainly it is not easy as many expecting, but we will gain travel suffering and cost associated with it, also keep a social distance due to the current event.
