Changes are coming to UK customs - here is what you need to know
This bite-size update from Biocair looks at upcoming changes to UK customs following its withdrawal from the European Union, and what they mean to the UK customs clearance process and your supply chain.
What is changing?
Back in August 2021 HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) announced that the Customs Declaration Service (CDS) will replace the Customs Handling of Import and Export Freight (CHIEF) system from 31 March 2023.?
Services on CHIEF will be withdrawn in two stages:?
*Update* There are reports of an extension to the 1st October 2022 deadline.
This new EU legislation introduces significant changes to the information required in both import and export customs declarations, particularly concerning the parties involved in the transaction and the valuation of the goods.
All payments made to HMRC in regard to CDS declarations (including deferment/FAS) must now be actioned via the importers Government Gateway account (CDS Cash account).

What do I need to do?
Even if you use a customs agent to help you with customs declarations, there are still actions you need to take. You need to:
You can set up a standing authority on the CDS within your customs financial account. You can also make changes to add or delete these in the same place.?
By 30 September 2022 you need to set up a new Direct Debit Instruction for the CDS if you use a duty deferment account.
If you do not apply for a CDS account, you may not be able to import goods into the UK from 1 October 2022.?Please visit gov.uk for more information.
