Changes to ArcGIS User Types

Changes to ArcGIS User Types

If you have attended any Esri conferences this year such as the Southeast User Conference in Florida, you may have heard that Esri is making changes to the User Types for ArcGIS Online and Enterprise. This is not the first time Esri has done this. Some may remember that with ArcGIS Online first came out, we had two user types. That was later expanded to include several different tiers and has since evolved into the user types we have now: Viewer, Editor, Creator, Mobile Worker, GIS Professional (Basic, Standard and Advanced). According to Esri, these coming changes are to help simplify the user model and add new functionality to those user types and make it easier to scale within an organization.

So what does this most recent change look like? Is Esri trying to change things just to change things? In this case, I don’t think any of that is true. In looking over the information I can find plus what I have seen in presentations at the Esri Business Partner Conference and the Southeast User Conference, I think this change is actually a good thing for us, their users and it is indeed doing what Esri indicates is the goal.

Why do I say that you may ask? In reviewing the changes Esri has actually added capability to the user types and merged some others to simplify the number of types. Here are the new user types that are coming in June with a short description to hopefully illustrate what I mean.

?Professional Plus

  • Merges capabilities of Creator User type and GIS Professional Advanced into a single user type
  • Includes an Advanced Licenses of ArcGIS Pro plus all extensions (If you are not familar with the different ArcGIS Pro license levels you can go to https://pro.arcgis.com/en/pro-app/latest/get-started/license-levels.htm for more information.)
  • Allows use of Machine Learning Models and production ready cartography tools plus increased analytic capabilities
  • Includes capabilities of Professional and Creator levels

Professional

  • Merges capabilities of Creator User Type with GIS Professional Standard into a single user type
  • Includes an ArcGIS Pro Standard license (does not include any extensions)
  • Provides advanced editing and data management capabilities Enterprise Geodatabases Geodatabase Topologies
  • Supports creation, configuration and maintenance of Utility Networks and Parcel Fabrics
  • Includes capabilities of Creator Level

Creator

  • Merges capabilities of Creator user type and Professional Basic into a single user type
  • Create and share content via ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise Maps Apps Dashboards Data Tools
  • Access to Experience Builder to build applications
  • Manage groups, members and content in ArcGIS Online or Enterprise (if given Admin role)
  • Includes ArcGIS Pro Basic license

Mobile Worker (no major change or update from previous user type with same name)

  • View and edit data in apps and dashboards such as Field Maps, Web Apps, GeoBIM and Instant Apps
  • Includes Contributor user type capabilities

Contributor

  • Review and edit data
  • Mark up and annotate maps in web maps and dashboards now including BIM/GeoBIM
  • View data in Field Maps mobile app
  • Includes capabilities of Viewer user type

Viewer

  • Basically unchanged from before
  • View maps, apps and dashboards from your organization

As you can see Esri has simplified the higher level user types to remove confusion about what you get and what you need. Under the current user licensing model, there was often confusion about if you need both a Professional license and a creator license in order to publish or manage content to ArcGIS Online or Enterprise. At least I was often asked that type of question. I believe this new model will help remove that confusion.

This is what I know about these changes for now. Esri has more detailed information posted to https://www.esri.com/en-us/c/product/introducing-new-user-types. I have not seen pricing information on these revamped user types yet. I expect that will be announced at the User Conference.
